Given Matthew 28:19, why did the apostles baptize using the name of Jesus?

And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days. (Acts 10:48)

When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. (Acts 19:5)

Don't forget Ephesians 4:5--One Lord, one faith, one baptism.

JESUS TAUGHT: "That REPENTANCE and REMISSION of sins should be preached IN HIS NAME beginning at Jerusalem." Luke 24:47

PETER OBEYED: "Repent and be BAPTIZED everyone of you in the NAME OF JESUS CHRIST for the remission of sins." Acts 2:38

SAMARITANS: "...They were BAPTIZED in the NAME of the LORD JESUS." Acts 8:16

GENTILES WERE COMMANDED: "...He COMMANDED them to be BAPTIZED in the NAME of the Lord." Acts 10:48

PAUL RE-BAPTIZED: "...When they heard this they were BAPTIZED in the NAME of the LORD JESUS." Acts 19:1-5

NO OTHER NAME FOR SALVATION: "...There is NONE OTHER NAME under heaven whereby we MUST BE SAVED." Acts 4:10-12

EVERYTHING DONE IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST: "Whatsoever you do in word or in deed, do ALL IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS." Colossians 3:17

The above scriptures are not given to refute Matthew 28:19 where Jesus told apostles to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. They merely show how the command was interpreted and obeyed by them.

The apostles knew what most religious leaders of today fail to recognize.

First: That JESUS CHRIST IS THE FAMILY NAME. (Ephesians 3:15)

Second: That the FULLNESS of the GODHEAD (Deity or God) dwelleth bodily in Christ. (Colossians 2:9)

They knew the name of the SON was JESUS CHRIST. ( 1 John 3:23)

They knew that the SON came in the FATHER'S NAME. (John 5:43)

They also knew that the HOLY GHOST was the spirit of CHRIST and would come in the NAME OF JESUS CHRIST. (John 14:26)

do no longer confuse the time period "in call of Jesus" with a actuality of the phraseology that the apostles makes use of at the same time as appearing the act of baptism. The time period (in both situations) in simple terms refers to doing something on the authority of the fellow call. Jesus stated that we were to baptize disciples, and he gave himself, his Father and the Holy Spirit because those who licensed them to do the baptism. The e book of Acts states that the apostles baptized because they were licensed to do such by technique of Jesus. Neither actuality is meant to be a commandment on what word to assert once you're doing the baptizing. even if you state that the batpism is done by technique of the authority of all 3, or by technique of the authority of Jesus, it continues to be baptism. The custom as improve to apply all 3 names because it truly is a superb education chance to remind new converts that God exist as a Trinity.

It is sad when people can't see the forest for the trees, in other words, the truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Rather than seeking the truths of the gospel they are content with accepting a man made doctrine created in 325 AD by the future Roman Catholic church. The is not one reference in the Bible that alludes to 3 separate but equal persons in the godhead. Any and all references to God deal with the oneness of God, not plurality. Duet. 6: 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

Over seven hundred times in the Old Testament, the Jewish name of God was JEHOVAH THE LORD. When the word "LORD" was spelled with all capitals, it always meant "JEHOVAH."

The Greek word for "Lord" in the New Testament, when spelled with a capital "L" always means "JEHOVAH." It was used over six hundred times.

W.E Vine's Expository of New Testament Words says that "Jesus" is a transliteration of "Joshua," meaning "JEHOVAH is salvation."

Acts 2:36 - "Let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God hath made that same Jesus both Lord (JEHOVAH) and Christ (Messiah)."

Jesus was asked in Matt. 22:36-38 and in Mark 12:28-30, "What is the first and great commandment of them all?" In Mark, Jesus quoted Deut. 6:4, "Hear, O Israel. the LORD our God is one LORD."

NOTE: In the Encyclopedia Britannica under the word "trinity," it states that because of Deut. 6:4, it would be impossible for Jesus and HIS Jewish apostles to believe in a trinity.

ONE FAITH The world today recognizes many faiths: Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran, Catholic and others.

The true church, which started on the day of Pentecost, was Apostolic and preached the Apostolic doctrine.

Jude, in verse three, admonished all to "contend for the faith that was once delivered to the saints."

Who delivered this faith? Peter, having the keys to the kingdom of heaven (Matt. 16:19), delivered the saving message to the Jews and later to the Gentiles (Acts 10). The Jews, under great conviction, cried out to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "What shall we do?" Peter said. "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. The promise is unto you and your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call" (Acts 2:38, 39)

Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. (Acts 2:41) This is the Apostolic faith and doctrine in action. Acts 2:42 - "And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine.

The name referred to in Matt. 28:19 is Jesus!!!

Because they understood that the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit is the same as the name of Jesus.

    JESUS IS THE NAME!

Matthew 28:18-20 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen

Most have understood this verse to mean ‘baptize in these titles”. Looking at the text, we see the command of Jesus is to baptize “in the name”. This is one singular name. Many Trinitarian scholars have recognized that Matthew 28:19 is referring to one name. It’s easy to figure out what this name is. All it takes is one question- what is the name of the Son? The name of the Son is Jesus.

Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Since Jesus is the name of the Son, and this command includes the name of the Son, the name of Jesus should be used in baptism.

Matthew was there on the day of Pentecost when Peter preached his sermon.

Acts 2:14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

Matthew certainly didn’t correct Peter if he felt that Peter had misunderstood Jesus’ command.

God speaks of a singular name. Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are not proper names, but titles. Even if they were names, this verse is talking about one name- not three names. What is the one name?

We’ve already seen that the name of the Son is Jesus.

Matthew 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Jesus said that he came in his Father’s name.

John 5:43 I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

The Holy Ghost is given in the name of Jesus.

Another question we should ask is “how did the apostles interpret this command”?

We see in the book of Acts that the Apostles understood Jesus’ command as ‘in the name of Jesus’.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Acts 8:16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

Acts 10:48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.

Acts 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

They recognized that the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost is Jesus. In every case in scripture that mentions a name being used in baptism it is always in the name of Jesus.

Jesus is the one Name of the One God.

  • 1 decade ago

Jesus essentially is God. Jesus is the mediator, so we baptize in the name of Jesus so that God will forgive us of our sins.

Baptisms should be in the name of the Holy Trinity
