My son fed his guinea pig marijuana!!!!!??????

Well now let me think here, are we going to punish your son for giving it to the guinea pig or wonder how and why he even has IT, seems like maybe you are focusing on the wrong topic here. Yes it could be a terrible outcome it the guinea pig got to much, and an expensive one i am sure, if you are so inclined to take it to the vet, or would you just allow the poor animal to die?.Just some food for thought here

First of all, why were you cleaning the cage? It sounds like he doesn't really care about it.

I think, and this is for the best, to have the guinea pig looked at by a vet, treated if he needs to be, and then give him to a more loving home. Obviously the pot was placed in the cage on purpose; that was careless and your son was not thinking about what might happen to the guinea pig.

You should also be concerned for your son. He got ahold of that marijuana somehow; and that's not a good thing that he had it in his possession. He's probably hiding more, and no doubt he's smoked it.

The punishing I will leave up to you. You are the parent.

You need to move your guinea pigs cage. What if he smokes pot in that room?? The smoke is no good.

That said, eating the pot will not kill the guinea pig. The LD50 for THC, the active component in marijuana is 1270 mg/kg for guinea pigs. Marinol, the pill replacement for pot is 25 mg. So theres no way a bud had enough to do any physical harm. that said it is wrong to get the animal high.

I think you should talk to your son and see what he is doing. I really hope it was an accident, it is cruel to make your pet get high with no knowledge of what is going on...

One thing that bothers me is everyone carrying on on how its a "bad drug", and blah blah blah.

While it is illegal, the reasons its illegal are not the same reasons heroin and crack are illegal. Those drugs kill. They are a public health issue that have been turned into a crime.

Pot, is a crime only because its illegal. You can't get addicted, physically. You can't overdose or kill yourself. It is helpful for many medical reasons. The main reason it was made illegal in the first place was because of racism. Seriously. Early 1900s, when the Mexicans started coming over to help worked on the railroads, they brought it with them to smoke at the end of the day to relax. But, since they ended up taking jobs from Americans (heh, sound familir at all?), people found a way to rid themselves of them.. And that was by making marijuana illegal. Sadly.

Then it just escaladed from there with the help from a ton of bad propaganda designed to scare people.

Anyway...

While its not toxic to humans in any sort of way.. And you'd literally have to smoke around 1500lbs in 15 minutes to OD (and even then.. You'd go from suffocation, not an OD)... That does NOT apply towards small animals.

It is unclear on how much it would take per each animal.. But probably a bit more than a single tiny bud... Either way, its dangerous and shouldn't be done. I have friends that give some to there older arthritic dogs, and it honest to God helps them.. But giving it to such a small animal, not knowing the dose.. Is incredibly stupid..

So while I started by answer by telling you pot isn't that bad.. Its still bad to give a guinea pig.. And since it is your house, and it IS illegal (despite the stupid reasons why), you should most definitly punish your son.

I would have a talk with him. Keep the bud. Present it. Let him know your very dissapointed, and very unhappy. As for HOW you should punish him.. Thats up to you. I don't know how you usually go about it.. But there grounding.. Extra chores.. ect..

Wow really how could he give your guinea pig pot? That's bad if you even allow your kid pot. That poor animal must be trippin right now. As for your son... You should take away his stash for a while and make him clean out the cage.
