Is it safe to leave your food cooking in the crock pot all day while you are away?

This may be a silly question! I just bought a crock pot and made an amazing roast, but I was home all day while it was cooking. Is it safe to leave it unattended for the entire day? Do you cook in yours while you are at work?

Update:

Awesome answers guys! I like getting answers I want to hear! Thanks! If any of you happen to look at this question again....is there a good website for crock pot recipes that you use? Thanks again!

I leave my Crockpot on ALL the time while I'm away from home. However, I'm careful. I'm always gone for about 10 hours or less. Usually much less. I also leave the cook setting on Low. Also only leave it on for long periods of time if the recipe calls for long cooking times. For example, don't leave a 4 hour Crockpot dish cooking for 12 hours. But of course that's common sense. Unless something happens where you can't come home for 24 hours or more, I wouldn't worry. The benefit of a Crockpot is the ability and freedom to do other things while your meal is cooking. Enjoy your Crockpot!

    Safe Crock Pot

That's what makes them so convenient. They have been made for years and are safe to leave alone all day cooking whatever you are having for dinner.

Sometimes I come home for lunch, throw something in the crock pot on high and it's done when I get home, about 5 hours later.

Yes it is. The purpose is to be able to slow cook meat and vegetable. So the Crock-Pot is a perfect gadget to do the cooking while your working away! Good luck, hope this helps, and hope your food turns out great. Just make sure there is enough liquid in it, No that it would be dangerous if you didnt, your food may burn!

It's safe, as far as I know. That's the beauty of a slow cooker/crock pot, they're designed for that!

I put mine onto my stove top (without turning the elements on of course!), make sure the cord is out of the way, turn it on low, go to work, come home and dinner is done! So convenient.

    I've done it frequently.

I usually park my crockpot on top of the electric stove (with the burners off of course) and put it on the low setting.

I figure the stovetop is a safe place, since it is designed to not catch things on fire.

Yes. Just make sure that the cord is not against the pot and that the pot is not against anything else on the cabinet.

It's fine. It's even better if you have the kind that has a timer and switches from cooking to warm. your food is less likely to get overcooked with that sort of timer. i love mine.

Yes, that's what they were designed for; slow-cooking.

I always add at least a cup of liquid; it conducts the heat.
