The Byzantine Empire - it's fascinating how it managed to survive for so long surrounded by jealous and more numerous enemies.
Timur the Great - described by at least one historian as "the most destructive monarch in history" Timur was one of the greatest and most successful military commanders of all time. He was also a great patron of the arts and scholarship, and, despite conquering a huge empire, preferred to live in a tent (albeit a huge silk lined one) rather than a palace.
WW1 - how a modern, advanced civilized Europe could start, and then continue, 4 years of senseless slaughter, where more men were killed more quickly for less gain in ground than at any other time in history, remains an important area to study and (try) to understand, particularly as WW1 changed everything and is largely responsible for shaping the world we live in today.

As much as my curiosity can leap into a deep search, it isn't
WHICH timeframe of History over another per se.
With me, for some reason it's about spotting parallels over which
to compare 'n contrast what we might call human nature or
human behavior. I won't belabor it here.
The scopes vary, and I tend to ask questions which may seem
incongruent at first--including the range of such scopes, ie,
how the weave of subjects influences people and further, I wonder
just how these things make history--versus the idea that they
merely happen.
All of it...the Political, Religions, Societal Effect and Affect, Music,
Economics and more...how much is readily available for everyone's
grasp, how much is kept from the majority, and how much grey area
within those two perspectives exists, and does it fluctuate cyclically?
Yeah--stuff like that.

The World Wars... I've always been fascinated by WWI and WWII, particularly it's political leaders (Churchill, Hitler, Stalin...).
