Rat sterile due to age?
My male I intend to breed is about 18 months old. The female he is paired with is about 7 months old. I've had them housed together for a little over two months now and there have been no babies. I know for a fact they mated, I caught them in the act numerous times. Is it possible he is sterile due to his age?

No, it is very rare that a male rat is sterile. I have had pet rats for many years,
and they do not become sterile with age. By the way 18 months is actually very young for a rat. Most people think rats live to about three years tops...Not true, ours all lived close to five. The key is keeping happy and being very attentive to their needs. ( dietary, cleaniness and active playtimes.)
Last thing make sure they are both oppisite sexes. If they are it is probably your female, there are alot of complications with the girls. Having numerous back to back liters tends to take a toll on the body of the female. So, when they do breed take a break and seperate the two after a couple of liters. Also be aware that some times the boy will eat the babies. Keep them apart when the babies come. (only untill they get their fur) Momma rats will eat the babies only if there is something wrong with it.
