Criteria for choosing a computer?

I need to buy a new computer because the one I have does not have enough RAM nor space to install more at a reasonable price to work as I want to. I have used computers for several decades and always Gateways because I got a good discount on them that is no longer available to me. I write manuscripts, use space for photos and music; do not do videos or games. I am looking for some criteria on how to work my way through all the brands, models and prices on the current market. Also, need opinions on the best retail location at which to buy computers. Thanks.

For a basic productivity machine, you will not need much. A dual core processor, 2GB of RAM, and a motherboard with integrated sound, NIC, and graphics should be more than enough. Hard drive size is up to you. I'd recommend an AMD CPU instead of Intel, since they are better in the lower price ranges.

If you want to buy online, Newegg.com is the best. Their customer service and prices are excellent.. Tigerdirect follows in second.

If you want to buy from a brick and mortar store, Microcenter has the best prices and usually have very good promotions (I just bought a dual core Athlon II x2 250 for $60 and received a free motherboard). Frys and Best buy are the next best options.

Look for something like these. Either one will meet all your specified needs.

What are the specs on your current computer? If we know this we can better help you. Some more information will help too. Your primary functions are word processing, music and internet browsing (just guessing on the last one)? What is your price range? Do you want something that comes with a monitor, printer, etc or just the tower? As far as a brick and mortar location, if there is a Tiger Direct store near you (http://www.tigerdirect.com/retailstores/compusaSto... I would check there.
