is the vet telling me the right thing?

my 54 lbd APBT has had the runs for four days. It started out of no where and was so bad a few days ago it was just dripping out of her. no mucous no blood no worms. we called the vet and they said pepto and chicken and rice. she did not poop at all yesterday and then today the runs again. not so squirty but deff the runs. it is all day long in the house and everything. which is not like her. otherwise she is playful, hungry acting normal drinking water and all. vet says dont bother to bring her in it could last a few weeks. does this sound right to you guys out there? i am overly concerned for her i think it is making me more upset then the dog but i dont know what to do. it dosnt seem normal for me. what do you think?

Update:

i called other vets 3 told me the same thing. she is not getting dehydrated because she is eating and she is drinking more than normal i am giving her water in a coffee cup so she thinks it is a treat. they said as long as she is acting normal not to be worried, i just feel so useless right now.

Update 2:

i now called over 20 different vets all said same thing give it a week or two. they said if she was vomiting or listless bring her in but since everything else is normal, not to worry to much. she is already on chicken and rice and pepto for the last 3 days and no improvement. she is going less often but still watery pudding like stuff. i have researched an think it is a parasite, just found out from my dumb hubby he let her drink dirty kiddie pool water from neighbors back yard. uhhh great!!

this definitely does not sound normal you should boil up some rice with some chicken breast or de boned chicken thighs and feed it to her hope fully the rice will help her harden her stool you should also buy her sum pedealyte or gatorade because like young kids dogs can get dehydrated Very easily

good luck i hope this helps her out

Most vets that I know would want to see the dog right away. Just because you didn't see any worms doesn't mean that they aren't there. In fact there are many parasites that you cannot see that cause diarrhea including giardia. There are many bacterial infections that can cause diarrhea including Camphlylobactor and Clostridia. Other diarrhea causes include foreign bodies, irritable bowel disease, auto-immune issues, diet changes, and others. Diarrhea is abnormal and should not be allowed to last for months.

You must live is a large area to find 20 vets that told you the same thing. Like I said most vets would have you bring the dog in for an exam. Are you telling these vets that you cannot pay for services?

Any vet telling you not the breed the dog in it could last a few weeks without seeing the to to make and actual diagnosis is not a vet I would continue to go to. Diarrhea like you describe (no blood, no mucus etc) for 24 hours is one thing and doesn't typically require treatment or a visit to the vet Any longer than that and the dog needs to see the vet as it is a problem and not normal. Find a new vet and take your dog into the vet. It could be something fairly harmless or it could be a serious problem. Neither your nor the vet will know that unless they have actually seen your dog.

It does not seem normal, just like a human a dog can get very dehydrated having the runs.

I would go to another vet and see what they say.

You still need to get to the bottom of why she's having diarrhea, but I'm sure that by now her gut flora is out of wack, making matters worse.

Put her on a good canine probiotic for at least 2 wks after the diarrhea stops. There are several brands out there.

Dump your vet, get another one.

If a dog has the runs for more than a 24 hour period with no sign of it getting better - it's always cause for concern. I always give my dog only 48 hours to get over something like that and if it shows no improvement, I bring him in.

I don't know what kind of vet would tell you to just hang tight for a couple of weeks - especially without seeing the dog.

Call up another vet and get her in!

    NOT normal!

sounds like what happened with my pups when they got a GI infection! antibiotics were necessary!

your vet should have asked you to bring the dog in for an exam and a fecal- and will probably need to put the dog on medication.

call them back, and talk to a vet, not the vet techs!

There are two similar conditions you haven't mentioned: Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (Google them). My dog has exhibited the symptoms which you have mentioned, including acting normal and playful. I give him pet probiotics at every meal. No problems, unless I forget for two meals in a row.

4 vets told you this could last for weeks? that ain't right. if anyone had diarrhea that long, they would get dehydrated and die! and what's your house going to look like after weeks of this? blech! ask your friends who have dogs if you can go to their vet, get a good referral.
