Why is it comon for englih speaking people to call a loved one "baby"?

Okay, I understand that babies are cute and you like to hold and comfort them. But on the other hand, a baby can stand on his/her own feet, can't eat by his/herself and pees/poops in his/her pants.

Why do english speaking people call a loved one (grown up) a baby? Are english speaking people using "baby/babe" just as a figure of speech without thinking what "baby" really means?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Good question!

We all know what is a baby, right?

If we saw babies we uttered words praising them like “cute”, “lovely”, “honey”, “sweetheart”, “darling”, “dear”, “beloved”, “innocent”, “angel” and “beautiful” etc. We say these words because our “HEARTS” feeds our “brains” to express “AFFECTIONS”. And when the Heart started to talk, it literally means “LOVE” that’s why people have learned to use “baby” in calling their loved ones.

If someone calls you “BABY” instead of “Honey Pie or Sweetie Pie” be glad as it could mean more than that! Baby is synonymous to all good adjective words relating to LOVE!

If someone calls you “BABY MONSTER” then be alarmed because this person for sure really hates you…. heard someone said this several times due maybe of frustration…

It depends entirely on who says it really - some people use expressions without any intention, others might use it in a manipulative way to establish superiority.

I know someone who freely calls other msn 'babe' which is very odd, but it's his way and he means nothing by it.

In parts of the UK, you might be called 'love' either by a woman or a man regardless of whether you are male or female yourself. It's not meant to be insulting, it's just a cultural thing - you have to understand the context in which the phrase is being used.

It makes more sense than the fact that Spanish speaking people call their children "mama" and "papa".

It is a term of endearment, similar to babe. It is unisex .

  • because they love that person as much as a mother would love her child or baby
