Fruits/Vegetables I can start planing now (autumn)?

Hi, I have a garden in my backyard that my little brother started but never bothered with after a while, so I was hoping to get something out of it, since he and my dad already turned the soil, added manure, etc. What fruits/vegetables should I start planting now?

I'm in zone 8a and I don't know what kind of sun it gets...my house faces south and it's behind that, and there's a forest behind that.

I would prefer to start from seeds, but I could always get them germinating in egg cartons or something.

You have great advice already - I can also suggest you can have kale, turnips, radishes and turnips -and as you have already been advised, lettuce should thrive.

The area has to get about 8 hours of sun per day or forget the veggies. So check that out first. It's kind of late for seeds now, but some that grow fast, like leafy greens can be started outside now. As you are in 8a you can plant carrot, onion and garlic and let them grow all winter, they will be ready to be harvested in the spring. If you can get some broccoli or cauliflower small plants now, they will work till your first freeze.
