What would you say to a friend who's dog died?

The dog hasn't died yet but it going to be soon because of age etc. He has had the dog for a long time and takes good care of it. But he is an older man who is a good friend so I'm unsure what to say when the dog goes.

Since the dog is still alive and being well cared for I wouldn't give it another thought until the dog does die.

Who knows, it might outlive you. Anything can happen to any of us at any time.

When the dog does pass on you will know the right thing to say because it will be honest and come from the heart.

Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing at all......Just be there to comfort him, and let him have someone to talk to about what hes feeling...A simple "I'm sorry you are going through this, you dog was very special to you and will be missed" may be all thats needed. I know when I have greived in the past over an animal, i didnt need a whole speech from anyone, but more like a shoulder to cry on......

Just be there for him, to some people their dog or pet in general is the equivalent to another child or best friend, he won't just be losing his dog he'll be losing his daily routine which the latter alone can be hard on people without death on top of it.

Get him something? like maybe a card and a nice framed photo of the dog or the dog and him if you can get your hands on one? and just tell him,... he had a great life and be sure to remember all the great and happy times yall had together and how much yall made each other happy.

Just say I'm sorry for your loss, and if he wants to talk about, listen. People become very close to their pets, especially ones they've had for a long time.

I am sorry. You guys sure had a great time together. You are lucky to have had so many great times and memories with such a loyal friend. Nothing will replace him/her, but nothing can take those memories and experiences.

Just say you're sorry, and mean it. Or just give him a hug or a squeeze on the shoulder. He will know.

better off just waiting until he says "Hey did you know my dog died?" and then you simply say "no but sorry for your loss." that's it and there will be no awkward situations.

Source(s): My dog died and people kept asking me if i was alright and it just pissed me off until i got another doberman
