The natural habit and habitat of an animal keeps its weight normal. You don't see an obese whale or a skinny whale. But you will see a difference in domestic dog fed with lot of meat, eggs etc and tied up with a string all day long becoming obese. Not so in a street dog which eats when hungry and food available and starves when not getting.

Whales are over grown cows who breathe water.
1) Cows cannot ever be remotely thin.
2) Whale don't swim as much as glide through the water.
That sounded a bit harsh to cows and whales. No offense intended.

If by that you mean what's with all the blubber (fat) that whales have, they are in the water all the time and the blubber has two purposes, one is buoyancy the other is insulation.
To get an idea of the insulation aspect, sit in a nice warm bath and you feel good, stay there and let the water get real cold and you will start shivering.
Now if you had a nice layer of blubber you wouldn't shiver.

Whales need thick layers of blubber for the icy ocean water. Humans do not.
But this question did make me laugh.
