A question about St. Peter?

I've heard that St. Peter is sort of a gatekeeper of those who can enter Heaven and those who cannot..can someone explain this more to me?

Update:

i'd like to add i've heard he has a "book" from God that tells who can get in and who cannot.

Peter was given the keys to the kingdom:

Mat 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

On the day of Pentecost Peter was asked by the crowd "what should they do"? At that point Peter opened the gates of the kingdom for whosoever will.

17Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18And I tell you that you are Peter,[c] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[d] will not overcome it.[e] 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven... NIV, Matthew 16 17-18

This verse is Jesus talking to Peter. In it he refers to Peter being given the keys of heaven.

From a doctrine point of view this is taken out of context. But many great art works etc have been done on this theme. Its not a commonly held belief, but a commonly known idea.

So far as the book idea goes, you are probably referring to the idea of the book of life/ book of the dead. this idea is in several religions, including christianity.

    Revelation 20:15

If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

the popular idea is that peter has the book of life, and stands at the gates (pearly white ones) of heaven. Its a common idea..... but very few take it literally..... but it does look good in art, and has several references in plays and movies too.

    hope this helps

This story is not true, Only God is the one that lets someone into heaven.
