Your going to have to go to a really good tattoo artist. Depending on how much black there is to the tattoo. More than likely you're going to have to get something dark, color wise, like purple, blue, dark maroon red, ect.

Well, it is hard for me to advise on this particular question without seeing what we are dealing with. One life, one chance is correct to a certain extent. A tattoo that is originally done in dominant black and grey is better left black and grey. As an artist, when I apply color to a piece that is designed as black and grey, I tend to leave out more of the detail of the shading so that it doesn't take away from the color. As an example, imagine going over a shaded area with a lipstick red color as opposed to an unshaded area. Where the lipstick red overlaps the shading, the color will appear darker. The level of darkness depends entirely on how dark the shading is that is being covered. So, with all of that being said, color choices are crucial. I'm sorry I couldn't offer any more than I have. As I said, it's hard to say without knowing exactly what I'm dealing with.

I agree with the above answers. And without seeing it, it is very difficult to advise you as to what to do.
If you do a totally new tattoo image, as a cover up tattoo, it will need to be at least 2Xs larger to incorporate the existing tattoo image. The new design would need to have dark areas to account for the existing tattoo.
As far as color on the existing tattoo, I agree with STICK, in that it may end up looking too dark and blobby if the wrong color is put with the black.
It sounds to me like your answer lies in a cover up tattoo, and an experienced and talented tattoo artist.
Here's before and after cover up tattoos, so you can see what can be done:
