2001 caddy engine light stays on?

Took it to dealer and they said it has to do with something with the trans and that the only way to fix it was to replace the trans. The car rides great. Has 170,000 miles. New trans would cost $5000. Car is worth book value $2500. I could just ride it with the engine light on on not do any damage but in NJ the car has to pass inspection every 2 years and they keep rejecting it due to the light being on. Help............ It's almost like I have to junk a good car because i won't be able to drive without the new inspection stickers

It most likely has to do with the trans since they scanned the computer but the only thing is that it may just be a bad trans solenoid and you need to take it to an independent mechanic to tell you for sure...

The dealer will make more money replacing the complete trans rather than just replacing what is truly needed...

Take it to Autozone and see what they have to say dealers will tell you anything to get money out of you
