Hi, I'm a qualified horticultralist. What you are describing is an earwig, or sometimes known as a pincher bug. These things are always to be found in my Dahlia flower heads. Unless they are actually causing a problem, they should be left alone. Earwigs eat many other little beetles and grubs that cause far more damage than they do.
Hope this helps.

Earwigs is also what comes to my mind...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earwig
"...There are 22 types of Earwigs in the United States
and over a 1,000 different species all over the world..."
