Depositing checks by mail?

What exactly do you do when mailing a check to your bank to be deposited? I assume you can't just throw checks into an envelope and expect the bank representative to know what to do with them. Do you just have to sign them and put your account number on the back? Is that it?

If you endorse it "For deposit only, acct # XXXXXXX" and sign your name you should be fine. I would probably also include a deposit slip to be on the safe side, though. And as has been stated, depositing via ATM is an option most of the time. I used to do that frequently until my bank switched from Shazam to some odball ATM network that nobody else belongs to.
