HELP! Laptop won't go to sleep!?

I've had my HP Pavillion dv2000 for two years and never had a problem with the sleep button. About two days ago when i hit the "function key" then the sleep key (F5) it goes into lock mode instead of sleep mode. This also happens when I go to start, power options, and sleep. My screen just goes black and doesn't shut off (i can hear the fan running and see that the CPU is still running). Once i move the mouse, it shows me the "locked" page.

I have not installed any new programs in the last two days and I am 100% sure i'm hitting the sleep mode on the F5 key and not the lock mode. I am running Vista 64bit and i have restarted and powered off my computer multiple times with no avail. Help please!

Try to hibernate it instead, saves everything and turns PC off, when you press start your computer will return to how you left it before sleep. This is how you do it on Windows Vista/7:

Type cmd.exe into the start menu search box and right-click the item in the menu and choose Run as Administrator.

In there type: powercfg /hibernate on

    IF this doesn't work try:

You go on - Control Panel and type in “Hibernate” in the Search. ThenClick “Turn hibernation on or off” Then Click “Change advance power settings” After that Scroll to and expand the “Sleep” option.

Then Select “Off” to the “Allow hybrid sleep” option.

Next you Scroll to and expand the “Power buttons and lid” option.

Now Select “Hibernate” for the “Sleep button action” option.

not too familiar with the situation but ill try, try going to your power options in your bottom right or control panel and within there there should be a way to change what the power button does, aka hibernate, shutdown, etc.

Sleep shuts down the exhibit and complex disk, even with the reality that computing gadget maintains to be on consumin very much less potential, even even with the incontrovertible fact that for the time of the adventure that your battery is going down together as pc is in sleep you will lose all your unsaved artwork. on the different hand on hibernate, the present state is saved and computing gadget doesnt consume any potential. the subsequent time you potential on your pc you will proceed from precisely the place you left. additionally, resuming from hibernation is swifter than sparkling boot(after shutdown). i in my view hibernate my pc yet additionally resart it as quickly as in few days using fact abode windows does look to decelerate after non-provide up utilization with out shutdown.
