The money from the wallets they stole from passers by went directly to fund al qaeda. Or at least thats what this guys sign on the corner said the other day.

If they were close enough.. their role in the attack was probably breaking the fall of the debris that fell from the buildings. Not a role they wanted.. but anyone on the street near the buildings played a roll by having debris fall on them.
