Good router with good range?

I got a new Netgear router (WNDR3300) to replace an older one. I live in an apartment next door to my grandparents. I pay for their cable and do not want to have to pay for another cable bill in my apartment. Sometimes, when the wind blows right I can receive a weak signal. I thought the newer, higher powered WNDR3300 router would give me better signal. In fact it did worse. Before I go buy another router, I would like to know a good router that will give me some serious OOMPH. I will be using the internet for email, online classes, and of course, for XBOX live :).
