What would be the best playmate for my dog?

We currently have a 3 year old male golden retriever/chow mix. We are looking to get him a friend so he will have someone to play with. He has been fixed, and whatever dog we would get would be fixed too! He is still very playful and hyper. Very loving too! He is about 50lbs.

I was curious if getting him a male friend would be better or a female friend. Also does the size matter for a playmate for him? Yesterday we went to a local place that had a lot of dogs from local shelters that were looking to be adopted. I fell in love with this little male papillon who weighs 10 lbs. I have been researching papillon's and I am starting to get really interested in that breed.

Any suggestions and/or recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Female, about the same size, mostly retriever.

If a 50-pound dog starts playing with a 10-pound dog, the 10-pounder will end up being the toy.

A 50-pounder can be nice to a 10-pounder, but their playing options are necessarily limited. If you want a playmate for your current dog, it means a dog he can chase and be chased by, a dog he can wrestle with. He can't do that with a Papillon.

Getting a dog of the opposite sex is the best choice. It is because the same sex can fight for dominance, and may not get along too well. When you do find a dog, bring your current dog with you and se if they get along well. Bring your dog on several visits to meet the new dog before bringing home the new dog. Make sure that if it does not work out you can bring back the dog .
