How to connect to the internet?

I am probably just having a brain fart right now... I recently attained a desktop computer that is on a different floor of the house of the wireless-internet-connection-modem-thingy. Is there a device that will pick up a wireless signal and then put the internet into the computer? Ohh! And it has to work on the latest edition of Ubuntu Linux.

Update:

So is that an internal or external card?

P.S. This is a desktop computer, not a laptop.

    You need a wireless card.

    I use a Linksys WMP54G and it works perfectly on Ubuntu.
