Why can't I install anything from the Ubuntu Software Centre?

When I try to install anything from the Ubuntu software centre a half second into the process I get an error message. It says that it couldn't find the package list and that this is a serious problem. The details are: E:Read error - read (5: Input/output error), E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

I am new to this OS and wouldn't know where to start fixing something like this. Any information or advice appreciated. Thanks

Ubuntu 10.04

Update:

Synaptics Package Manager crashes when I open it.

maybe the package list files are corrupted?

were there any errors when you installed ubuntu?

try opening Applications > Accessories > Terminal and type:

    sudo aptitude update

    sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock

try this - don't worry that it will hurt anything if that is not what it is

also you should google any error messages you get but make sure the answer is from 2010 or 2009 if possible
