3 AnswersSoftware7 years agoHow can I install gmount on Ubuntu?
I have a laptop that is running Ubuntu but can't connect to the internet via wireless. I'm guessing that my wireless card isn't compatible.
I downloaded Linux Mint and I'd like to install it on the laptop running Ubuntu. I have an ISO but no disk at hand that is big enough for it.
So I'd like to burn the image as a virtual drive on the Ubuntu laptop. I've read I need to install gmount to do this. However without an internet connection the usual method isn't going to happen.
On another laptop I downloaded gmount from Source forge and have transferred it to Ubuntu laptop. I think this is as far as I will get on my own as I have no experience using Ubuntu.
I've got a whole lot of files of different types and I don't really know how to proceed. Any advice?
Thanks in advance.
2 AnswersComputer Networking9 years agoWhy won't my laptop and HTC Wildfire S recognise each other?
Since yesterday my laptop and HTC Wildfire S phone aren't recognising each other. There is no connect type prompt on my phone, nor does the autoplay window appear on my laptop.
On My Computer my phone is displayed as a generic removable drive, without the HTC icon or name. When I attempt to explore this drive it prompts me to enter a disk into the drive. It also does not appear in the sync tab of WMP.
I have tried restarting both devices, turning off and on USB debugging, and switching the USB ports.
On connecting or disconnecting the phone from the computer the appropriate system sound is played. der-der!
Any help much appreciated

I just ran a BitDefender scan and, amongst other minor issues, I got this:

I'm confused by the value for path... Thanks in advance.
3 AnswersSecurity10 years agowireless internet problem?
I cannot connect to the internet on my home network. I am on a laptop and am connected to an alternative network. I can connect to the router of my network but it doesn't allow me internet access. This is also the case when I connect via ethernet. My flatmates can connect to the internet with no problem. And I can connect to different networks using the same laptop.
I have:
> ran the windows diagnose thing. It doesn't know what's wrong
> restarted laptop, router, etc.
> rang up my ISP but died of boredom after being on hold for 30mins
>checked the wireless network connection settings
I'm running Windows 7 Professional and BT Infinity with a Homehub 2.0 router.
Any ideas what may be wrong?
Thanks in advance
3 AnswersOther - Internet1 decade agoMultiple iexpore.exe, opera.exe problem?
Once I open either Opera or Internet Explorer 8 I notice in the process manager multiple copies of the process but with varying RAM usage. This happens every time I click open either of the web browsers. Sometimes the processes multiply faster than I can end them and indefinitely, but more commonly it seems to insist on having around five and will always start them again after I've attempted to end some.
This problem is alongside, and I suspect related to, a problem I've been having with google on Opera. Fairly often, when I make a search and click on some of the results I notice in the address bar that I am not being taken to the address stated on the results page. Before anything loads I am skipped through a number of different suspect-looking domains and I end up on a spammy looking search engine called Gomo. On one of the occasions I noticed this happening, I was being redirected away from all addresses apart from Wikipedia and BBC pages I clicked.
I have ran the McAffee my laptop, which is only a week old, came with. I have used AdAware and MalwareBytes and none of the scanners came up with anything. I probably would have let this whole thing slide for a while, even though it is worrying, but now I find that I can't open any files on my system now I think of it the start up of the laptop stuck on a black screen after log in that I've never seen before.
Internet Explorer 8 64bit
Opera (most recent stable build)
Windows 7 premium home edition
Dell Inspiron 15
As far as I can tell, process manager shows that I'm only running the most essential processes.
1 AnswerSecurity1 decade agoWhy can't I connect to Xbox live?
Hello, I'm having trouble connecting to Xbox Live. The Xbox reports that it has access to the internet (and I've checked the ports are all ok) but it still can't connect to the xbox live servers. Our router broke so we ordered a replacement and since then I've had sporadic access. Resetting the router or restarting the xbox solves the problem for a couple of hours but I was after more of a concrete solution.
Thanks for your time

3 AnswersXbox1 decade agoWhy can't I install anything from the Ubuntu Software Centre?
When I try to install anything from the Ubuntu software centre a half second into the process I get an error message. It says that it couldn't find the package list and that this is a serious problem. The details are: E:Read error - read (5: Input/output error), E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
I am new to this OS and wouldn't know where to start fixing something like this. Any information or advice appreciated. Thanks

2 AnswersSoftware1 decade agoHow to resuscitate someone with an implanted cardioverter-defibrillator?
I've been looking into taking a first aid course, it would be a useful skill to have. My dad has an ICD - an implanted defibrillator - and I was wondering what the steps would be to resuscitate someone with one fitted. I know that obviously the defibrillator is meant to do that, but if for some reason it failed what would you do? Can you perform standard CPR on someone with one fitted? Do you run the risk of being shocked if you are touching someone with an ICD that is defibrillating them or is it localised?
Obviously I'd seek medical aid at this point also.
Thanks!
2 AnswersHeart Diseases1 decade agoHow to change extra monitor settings when HDMI cable is not plugged in?
I was fiddling around with the settings under Devices and Printers trying to get a display on a Phillips flatscreen TV from a laptop. Nothing was being displayed. I think I applied the setting so that the main display would be on the TV. But as the TV isn't picking up the signal now whenever I plug it the HDMI cable the laptop screen goes blank and just displays the background and I can't use it. I want to be able to change the settings back but I don't know how to edit the settings when it isn't plugged in. Help much appreciated as this isn't any of my stuff. Thanks

2 AnswersMonitors1 decade agowhat essay question should I choose?
I'm a second year politics and international relations student. For the past six months I was supposed to be working on a 6,000 word essay on a topic of my choice. After researching a few options that didn't work out, and after much procrastination, it is now two weeks before the deadline and I haven't even thought of a question.
I think it would be sensible for me to do a question on something I know a little on, and in which there is a lot of material on, so I've been looking for a decent essay question on some aspect of the Israel/Palestine conflict/ situation up to and including the 1967 war.
I'm having a lot of trouble coming up with any question, I'd like to do it either on zionism/panarabism, 1948 or 1967, the British mandate period or maybe on some regional aspect to the situation in the pre 1967 period, but I'm not limiting myself to these topics.
I'd really appreciate any further ideas for the question, or suggestions for the question itself.
Thanks very much.
2 AnswersHigher Education (University +)1 decade agowhy do I have internet connectivity problems?
Windows Vista, Netgear Wireless N WNR2000, ISP Virgin media, Virgin modem, dynamically assigned ip
Recently I've had internet connectivity problems and I couldn't pinpoint a possible cause since we've made no changes to any settings. We have a good amount of wireless signal over the whole house, but every so often we'll be disconnected from the network. On trying to reconnect I've been getting a variety of error messages when I run the windows diagnostics but the most common one is that the network is apparently hidden and that's why we can't connect.
After this the network will usually come and go, while we still are unable to connect, and sometimes it will appear as if it is two connections, with one ssid being the name we chose, and the second just the name of the router. This has been accompanied by painfully slow internet speeds when we do finally connect.
Resetting the equipment for a long time seems to do the trick but after a while the same problem presents. According to the router page everything is fine and updated. I find the fact that it's an intermittent problem with no particular obvious cause (to me at least) very frustrating and I'd appreciate any help or pointers. I've tried Virgin Media technical support but I generally have an awful time dealing with that isp.
Thanks again.

1 AnswerDrama1 decade agoCheap places to stay in Edinburgh?
Are there any very cheap places to stay in Edinburgh? My friend who is driving us up from London will need somewhere to get some real sleep, but apart from that we're not too fussy. We are youths so are open to youth hostels. I've seen hostels for £20+ which I eventually got used to the idea of, only to find out that they've not rooms free. I know that this is a bad time to try to book accommodation at the last minute... but does the university rent out their halls? any German tentstation things going on?
Money is tight but we are not very discerning. Thanks in advance.
2 AnswersEdinburgh1 decade agoWhy does Control Panel only let me remove certain programs from the start-up programs menu?
A few stupid programs keep erroring out on start-up so I set to get rid of them to speed up the process of turning my computer on.
However control panel only wants to let me disable certain start-up programs, and annoyingly enough, they're the really benign dull ones I couldn't give two about. When I try clicking on the ones I want to disappear, the remove option greys out. How can I force the computer to obey my wishes?!

1 AnswerSoftware1 decade agowhy does my internet speed vary so?
I did a few speed tests when something I was streaming was loading absolutely awfully. Normally I can watch it straight off but it would only give me two minutes at the time, then completely forget to keep buffering so I'd have to reload the page.
In the two minutes I spend doing a handful of those speed tests, I got speeds ranging from 5.5 - 19.5 mbps, yet even the peaks didn't seem to affect the buffering speed. It's still crawling.
A month ago I posted about really slow wireless but with a high (20mbps) theoretical maximum. I never did find out the speed for that time because I couldn't even load those test pages... I thought I resolved the problem by following the advice I got on here and changing the channel of the Wireless.
Windows Vista, Wireless (Netgear, wireless N), close proximity to router, CPU usage and physical memory fine.
Many thanks
3 AnswersComputer Networking1 decade agoport forwarding problems with torrents and p2p clients?
I'm trying to use Azureus and Soulseek but when I test the various ports that I want to use, I get error messages, saying the port is closed/ can't be communicated with.
Before I got my new router I was never even aware of the existence of ports. P2P and torrents clients worked just fine. Do I need to set something up on the router page?
I feel as if I'm leaving out some vital details.... thanks

2 AnswersComputer Networking1 decade agoWhy is my new wireless adapter/ wireless connection seeming to slow down my internet connection so much?
Recently I moved from a wired to a wireless connection, and the internet speed on my PC has been so much slower since. When running speed tests it shows that the speed has halved, although it feels like it has done more than that, browsing is excruciating.
I have a Netgear wireless N router and a Belkin wireless N adapter, I run Windows Vista and as far as I know the CPU never gets massively busy, nor am I running out of memory at all. To try and solve this I had my internet speed doubled to 20 MB, but that hasn't helped whatsoever.
The odd thing is that the internet speed of the two laptops also running off this connection are speedy as anything. They're never doing anything too strenuous, no torrents or anything. The PC internet speed is just as slow when the laptops are not connected.
I've password protected the wireless connection and I can see no-one else is on the network.
Thanks in advance, if I can't resolve this then the wireless has to go, and that would be sad.
