How to resuscitate someone with an implanted cardioverter-defibrillator?
I've been looking into taking a first aid course, it would be a useful skill to have. My dad has an ICD - an implanted defibrillator - and I was wondering what the steps would be to resuscitate someone with one fitted. I know that obviously the defibrillator is meant to do that, but if for some reason it failed what would you do? Can you perform standard CPR on someone with one fitted? Do you run the risk of being shocked if you are touching someone with an ICD that is defibrillating them or is it localised?
Obviously I'd seek medical aid at this point also.
Thanks!

You can perform CPR on your dad with his ICD. Also, an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) would help in this situation. Just follow the prompts from the AED and place the pads at least 1" away from the ICD. Taking a course would be a great idea. AEDs are also available in the home now without a prescription. Good luck!

You cannot be shocked by an implanted defibrilator.
Do CPR until emergency medical assistance arrives.
An external defibrilator can still be used when someone has an implanted defibrillator. You can buy an automated external defibrilator to keep at the house if you are particularly worried about his implant failing, but what you will really need is an emergency medical team that will have medications and a manual external defibrillator.
