Christians - Where does the Bible teach that smoking tobacco is a sin?

I don't find smoking mentioned anywhere in the Bible, yet many (not all) Christians insist that it is a sin. Where does the Bible teach this? Book, Chapter, and Verse.

I was taught that too. They referenced something to the effect of "not use your nose as a chimney" I'm an atheist though so I didn't bother to research where it said that.

    2 Corinthians 7:1

Paul wrote: Let us cleanse ourselves of every defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in God’s fear. In 2006 the World Health Organization described tobacco use as “the second major cause of death in the world.” Each year, some five million people die as a result of tobacco consumption. By comparison, about three million die each year from HIV/AIDS. During the 20th century, smoking took the life of an estimated 100 million people, almost as many as were killed in all the wars of that century. Indeed, the wisdom of avoiding tobacco is now widely accepted.

In 1895 Charles T. Russell directed attention to 1 Corinthians 10:31 and 2 Corinthians 7:1 and wrote: “I cannot see how it would be to God’s glory, or to his own profit, for any Christian to use tobacco in any form.”

1 Corinthians 10:31 says: "Therefore, whether YOU are eating or drinking or doing anything else, do all things for God’s glory."

2 Corinthians 7:1 states: "Therefore, since we have these promises, beloved ones, let us cleanse ourselves of every defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in God’s fear."

Over doing anything is a sin. Eating too much KFC also defiles the body.

    All have sinned !

God is no respecter of persons !

Israel always stumbled because they went about establishing their own righteousness.

Christians are human beings and they also ... swallow a camel but gag on a gnat!

Many people have a problem with quiting an addiction ... God is conforming you into His image ...

We all have sin in our life ... that for one reason or another it is still occurring ... Not right but ...

(1 John 1:8 KJV) If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

(1 John 1:9 KJV) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(1 John 1:10 KJV) If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Paul Said He found a law ...

(Romans 7:25 KJV) I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

(Romans 8:1 KJV) There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

God makes us NOT want to Sin ... and we condemn Sin ... and Try to be like Jesus !

Simple if smoking can stop you from acting in Love to another person or God himself than it's got to go. Otherwise it's no different than eating something from the old testament law that is prohibited, like pork for example. You take it on faith.

The Bible never directly mentions smoking. There are principles, however, that definitely apply to smoking. First, the Bible commands us not to allow our bodies to become "mastered" by anything. "Everything is permissible for me—but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible for me—but I will not be mastered by anything" (1 Corinthians 6:12). Smoking is undeniably strongly addictive. Later in the same passage we are told, "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Smoking is undoubtedly very bad for your health. Smoking has been proven to damage the lungs and the heart.

Can smoking be considered "beneficial" (1 Corinthians 6:12)? Can it be said that smoking is truly honoring God with your body (1 Corinthians 6:20)? Can a person honestly smoke "for the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31)? We believe that the answer to these three questions is a resounding "no." As a result, we believe that smoking is a sin and therefore should not be practiced by followers of Jesus Christ.

Some argue against this view by pointing to the fact that many people eat unhealthy foods, which can be just as addicting and just as bad for the body. As an example, many people are so helplessly addicted to caffeine that they cannot function without their first cup of coffee in the morning. While this is true, how does that make smoking right? It is our contention that Christians should avoid gluttony and excessively unhealthy eating. Yes, Christians are often hypocritical by condemning one sin and condoning another, but, again, this does not make smoking honoring to God.

Another argument against this view of smoking is that many godly men have been smokers, such as the famous British preacher C.H. Spurgeon, who was known to smoke cigars. Again, we do not believe this argument holds any weight. We believe Spurgeon was wrong for smoking. Was he otherwise a godly man and fantastic teacher of God's Word? Absolutely! Does that make all of his actions and habits honoring to God? No.

In stating that smoking is a sin, we are not stating that all smokers are unsaved. There are many true believers in Jesus Christ who smoke. Smoking does not prevent a person from being saved. Nor does it cause a person to lose salvation. Smoking is no less forgivable than any other sin, whether for a person becoming a Christian or a Christian confessing his/her sin to God (1 John 1:9). At the same time, we firmly believe that smoking is a sin that should be forsaken and, with God’s help, overcome.

When I came to Christ, my first instinct, empowered by the Spirit of God, is that I left cigarettes, drugs, sex, parties, etc, etc. all behind in a quick cold turkey period.

It doesn't say, "Thou shalt NOT smoke cigarettes." It does however instruct those who are His children to take care of the their bodies, for the Holy Spirit indwells every believer. Our bodies are the temple of the Living God. We are to honor God with our bodies, by taking care of them and staying fit and healthy...everything good flows from God.

Good and bad are clear cut issues...they're either good, or they're bad... why would you want toxins in your body?

You won't find that word in the bible. You have to read between the lines. It is a sin to harm the body that God created.Smoking is one of those harmful choices.

It doesn't mention it but if you really loved God you wouldn't be a pot head. My dad's side of the family does that and they hate us because we're Christian and their lives are ruined from the stupid stuff! They don't care about anything but their drugs. It's a bad habit don't get into it.
