Morning Glory. How do I kill it?

Hi. I'm in England and I think I have Morning Glory in my back garden. It has climbed over and under my 6 foot fence from the very overgrown garden at the bottom of my garden. It comes every summer and gets worse every year. It smothers everything it touches. It covers my lawn, my shed, my kids swings the trampoline. Literally everything. I'm sick to death of cutting it down.

Does anyone know how I can get rid of it for good? Everyone tells me it's extremely hard to kill, but there must be something I can do?

Please help. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

It sounds like you have a bindweed (wild Morning Glory family). No fun at all! Cutting it would only cause the plants to spread as I guess you've found.

The safest way is to get the plants at their early growth stage and pull them by hand. It isn't hard but it does take vigilance and consistency. If it is coming from another person's property then you'll have to use a barrier.

This has amazing thick white roots that go down several feet and are brittle so its impossible to dig them all out, but digging out as much as you can find is a good start.(The country name for them is devil's guts!) Then when the new shoots come up put in canes for them to climb up. When they are quite big lay the canes down on the ground and spray them with Roundup. This way you avoid getting the Roundup on other plants. Then watch the garden every day and remove any new shoots you see. You will probably never get rid of all of it but this is your best chance.

Round Up Brush & Ivy killer is the best for this. This is a vine that just keeps sprouting, so you need a product stronger than the original weed killer. Spray it at the bases of the plant, wherever you find it coming out of the ground. When it dies back during winter, spray any new growth the second you see it next spring.

lotsa luck.... my friend in zone 7 has found morning glory seeds sprouting after five years in the soil!!.... and that is the only way you'll be rid of them...is to keep them from setting and dropping seeds... ever....pulling green vines and then waiting for little sprouts and pulling them, too , is the only way to stay ahead of them.... over and over, those little hearts leaves will show up.... and you'll THINK you got them all, but there will still be more.... going after them with poisons is useless as the seeds are coated and the poisons won't mean a thing to them.... you have to wait for the sprouts... and if you see a sprout , it's way better to just pull it than to go find some spray to kill it with.... you'll have less crap in your soil if you just pull them when you see them......

if it's Bindweed, same deal.... pull out the vines and then watch for new sprouts.... over and over again..... if you cannot, then cover the area where the worst growth comes from with a sheet of plywood, and cover that with mulch...leave that a few years..... you'll still get sprouts after you remove it, so watch for them...

Yes!!!! Round Up is the only way to go. It used to grow IN my back yard until Round-UP killed it! I have it growing from three neighbors yard in my backward. I control it by squriting it every 3 or 4 months even if it looks dead.

    Good luck.

Morning Glory is VERY difficult to get rid of.

I suggest covering all areas with a tarp or cardboard to block out all light.

You can cut it right back one last time and then apply a Weedkiller called Resolver 24H. it kills everything!!!!

why don't you just buy some dynamite and put it under the plant and blow it up then see if it grows next year .=P
