  • Moving propane appliances from a camper.?

Tiny house, off the grid. Out of money. A friend will give me a camper that hasn't been moved in 20 years. Where it sits now, everything works. But it will have to move about 20 bumpy miles. Propane fridge, hot water heater, furnace. Charging system from 110 to 12v. How much time would it take to do the demo/removal. Hasn't moved in 20 years. Is that a problem?

  • Removing propane fixture and charging system from a camper.?

We're completing our off the grid tiny house, and have run out of money. A friend offered me an older camper that has a working propane fridge, furnace, and water heater. The 110 to 12v charging system works as well. How difficult would it be to remove them, and install in the cabin? We could use the camper for storage after, so disposing of it isn't an issue.

  • Trouble charging my Samsung Galaxy tablet.?

The cat ate the original micro-USB cord within days. I've since gone through about 5 replacements. They all worked fine for a couple weeks, and then need a bunch of patience and tweaking to get a charging connection. Problem with the plug within the tablet, or just the knockoff cords?

  • How tall would my chimney need to be?

I live in a tiny, bungalow-style house between two three-story homes. It has been extremely easy to heat in the past, as I've kept the thermostat pretty low. My mom is ill, and is living with me, and is constantly complaining about being cold, even with the furnace running almost non-stop. If I were to install the small woodstove I have, how high would the chimney have to go up to insure that I don't get backdraft? From what I remember, the chimney should clear the roofline of the surrounding buildings. There is only about 20' between my house, and both buildings next door. If I have to go high enough to clear their rooflines, I'm thinking it will be at least 30 feet of chimney. Not exactly do-able.

  • This is difficult for my dog.?

I have two homes. One is off the grid, and out in the boonies. There I would love for her to bark, and let me know if anything is close. My other home is in a village across from a playground. There, I would like for her to just be quiet. Confusing for her...any ideas?

  • Curious about ticks and Lyme disease?

I live in Northern Vermont, where ticks and the occurrence of Lyme disease is fairly new, but exploding. The tick population has increased dramatically here in the last few years. My dog is vaccinated, and we use advantix monthly. Today, after just a 20 minute walk, I found 4 ticks on her. They weren't feeding, they were just roaming around. My concern is that these ticks are just hopping on one warm body, finding her unappetizing, and then hopping off once they get in the house. Wondering???

  • Lyme disease in dogs.?

Anyone else completely confused by what your vet says about Lyme Disease? Both my son's dog, and my dog were vaccinated, and had the booster. The vet explained to me that the vaccination was only about 70% effective. Today, Shane took Mac to be neutered, they did a blood test in house, and he was positive for Lyme. Both Shane and I use Advantix , just as recommended on the label.

After Shane called me, I called my vet, to see if we should have Charlie's blood tested. He told me that the in-house test often throw positive to dogs who have received the vaccine. He explained that even the most sophisticated test will only show if your dog has been bitten by an infected tick, and is carrying the antibodies. They are not conclusive as to if the disease is present. He also told me about two dogs he had seen last week. With both of them, the most advanced test results concluded that both dogs have the antibodies associated with natural infection (e.g. tick bit); they also both showed positive for antibodies attributed to a vaccination. However, neither of those dogs had been vaccinated.

I had a Springer Spaniel that acquired Lyme Disease in 1982. We were visiting my grandmother on the Cape, and I plucked a tick off him. We didn't have ticks here in Northern Vermont at that time. He was sick as a dog, no pun intended, within 24 hours of that bite. We made two stops on the way home, scheduled by the first vet we saw. He was hydrated with IV, and we went on our way north. He spent a week at our vet here, and was healthy enough to come home, but he'd developed serious swelling in his right front elbow, and his back left elbow.

I was at the grocery store line a few days later, and was reading a tabloid about children in Lyme, CT. that had all developed similar symptoms. The same as my dog! I called the vet the next day, and he told me had recently heard of the disease, but from his research, was convinced that dogs could not acquire it. It took some persuasion, but I convinced him to use the same course of treatment that they were using on the children, on my dog. With the exception of recurring asymmetrical joint swelling, he lived to a ripe old age.

This is what I know, wondering about anyone else with experience about this knows.

  • I'm moving off the grid. The only power we'll have is from a generator and our solar panels..?

Is there a way I can get satellite internet using 12V? I will only have 110 when I run the generator. Does the satellite need to be followed 24/7, or can you just turn on the receiver, and be connected?

  • I think my dog had a seizure?

Of course if you have an animal emergency, it happens on a Sat. night. Called the vet, got the service. So, my 3 year old lab scared the poop out of me tonight. She was sleeping soundly under my chair, and when I got up she was really nasty. She's never ever growled at me. When I was trying to calm her, she was shaking, tried to bite me, and it took about 5 minutes for her to calm down. We went out, she peed and pooped, but she's still not herself. Could it be that she had a bad dream, and is now so sorry that she tried to bite me? If she had a seizure, how do you know, and what do you do?

  • My hot water is brown?

I've noticed in the last few days, that we don't have as much hot water as I used to. I thought it was because of the colder temperature in the basement. I took a bath today, and wouldn't have noticed it except for running the water in the white tub. The hot water is quite brown. The cold water looks fine. I have a basic lp gas hot water heater, maybe holds 40 gallons, but not certain.

  • My two year old sweet female lab is hating our cat....all of a sudden?

The poor cat can't even come downstairs without her growling, snarling, and chasing. They have always gotten along, but now suddenly; the dog is being very mean. Wondering why, and how to convince the dog that the cat gets to live here too

  • A question about animal cruelty?

We have a defunct tennis camp right next door. I live where it gets to 30 below 0 deg. in the winter. 3 winters ago, the neighbors stored 2 goats and 2 sheep in the tennis courts all winter. No shelter at all. I carried them water and hay, until I finally called the dept. of agriculture, and they were removed. They came back the next spring, with a huge draft horse. They put a small plastic hut in there for the smaller animals, but the horse lived without shelter all last winter, despite numerous calls to the local and statewide authorities. We were flooded this summer, with Irene, and they had to be moved out for a few weeks. One goat, and one sheep are back now, and they have their tiny hut. The owner HATES me....but he doesn't even live close by. Our last conversation was him telling me that he was going to get a restraining order on me for giving food and water to his animals. I've spoken with the Humane Society, PETA, and the Dept. of Agriculture, and gotten no help. Any other ideas?

  • my dog has the shivers?

Took her to the vet today, and he says she's fine and is shivering for attention. Every night for the last couple weeks, right before bedtime, she starts to shiver. She's not in the crate anymore, and has her choice of furniture to sleep on. Is she really shivering so we don't go to bed? I can't deal with her sleeping with us, we have a 32 lb. cat that sleeps in our bed. I work days, my husband works nights.....and our bed is too crowded as it is.

  • home equity line of credit?

When we applied for a home equity loan on our second property (that was left to me by my ex-husband), we found out that my husband has a CD of a significant amount in the same bank in which we applied. His mom recently passed away, and she must have put that money in his name. She died very suddenly, so was never able to tell us about this. My question is....does it make sense to establish this home equity line of credit to consolidate debt, and make improvements to our primary home; or should we use the CD. My husband thinks we should save the CD for a "rainy day". My concern is that the home equity loan will be on the home that my ex-husband left to me (completely debt free), to insure that our children will always have a soft spot in which to land. I was completely in favor of getting this loan, until I found out about the CD his mom had in his name.

  • Curious about my dog's heat cycle?

I came back on March 16th, after being gone for a few months, helping my mom get back on her feet. Charlie came into heat that day. I just got back last week, after 3 weeks of helping my in-laws in a similar situation, and Charlie came into heat, once again, the day I got home. Coincidence, timing, or does it have something to do with Mama being home?
