What does Meg Whitman mean when she says she feels no obligation?
California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman has been quoted quite often explaining that because she has self-funded much of her campaign, she would go to Sacramento obligated to no one.
Why would Meg not feel obligated to serve the voters and residents of California?
And why would she want to enter a career of public service?
"No one" means "no one." Simple, really.
If $25 million from contributors cannot buy an obligation from Meg Whitman, why would she feel obligated to the voters and residents? After all, they are members of unions and trade groups, and associations, too.

Like most Republicans they are obligated to their top contributors and big businesses in the state. You dont know what an unknown person will do once in office and she has never said specifically what her plans are. That scares me. With Jerry you know what you are getting.
You are right in making that point. You can bet that there are many Republican contributors and Pete Wilson's people who are contributing. The $120 million paid for the TV ads.
She does not really care about the people of California. That separates her from Jerry Brown. No wealthy ex-Governor would move to Oakland and still lives there, and attempt to make it a better place. She would remain secluded in her Atherton mansion, like Arnold continued to live in Los Angeles.
Whitman is against unions but those are the working people of the state. Granted the municipal unions that cover the correctional guards, the police, the firefighters, transportation, construction union workers get high salaries, expensive pensions and benefits and I know Jerry Brown believes that. But trade unions have only working class people in their ranks like teachers and hotel workers.
I dont know why anyone would want that job including Jerry Brown at age 72 but he knows what to do without training. Whitman has NO political or government experience like Arnold.

Well, she stated she wants to move to Sacramento to better serve the voters of California by personally getting involved with the people at the capital and learning what everyone's goals are and finding a way to meet as many as possible.
I don't know why she would enter a career in public service. I wondered this myself, but I've often thought that if I had the money and experience to make a difference to so many people, I would want to...simply because it feels good knowing you made a difference.

Why would Meg not feel obligated to serve the voters and residents of California?
That's not what she meant. What she means is that if she's not taking money from lobbyists, she won't be expected to hand out any favors to them if she gets elected.
"No one" means "no one." Simple, really.
Only for the simple minded such as yourself.

Of course, she means obligated to the special interests that would provide campaign funding for her.
She will not be beholden to the special interests, like unions, environmental groups, business groups, etc.
