Dr is talking about stripping my membranes and I am only 38 weeks? Why?
I have dr apt tomorrow and she said last week that this week she would try doing that. I had a ultra sound that showed the baby was 7lbs a few weeks ago so they are concerned the baby will be 8-9lbs. I never had ANY issues going into labor on my own with our first child and the labor was only 12 hours and everything went fine delivering a 8lb baby vaginally. Is this the dr jumping the gun and should I ask her to wait until after the due date? I was only dilated 1cm last visit. I am 38 weeks and a few days now. I have heard of friends having this procedure done who are late but this early?

It is early to have your membranes stripped. If you do not want your membranes stripped --- tell your doctor you don't want them swept until after your due date.
A 8-9lb baby at 40 weeks is no where near unusual. My first was 8lbs at 38 weeks and my second was 9lbs at 39 weeks --- big for their GA ... but not huge. Also ... my ultrasounds did indicate big babies .... but no talk of a membrane sweep/induction was discussed.

Wow! Sounds to me like you have answered your own question. You have no issues with your body/baby/placenta making the decision on when the big day should be, your past history is great!
This doctor is definitely rushing things and making decisions FOR you versus with you (as an informed mother). I am surprised that they even did an internal at 37 weeks. Also, membrane strips are not benign as there is risk of introducing infection as well as rupturing your membranes. I'd also recommend having your doctor keep the checks until you are well into labour as they don't really tell you anything about when the big day will be.
Your body is not going to make a baby too big for your body so thank your doctor for the offer to help speed things up but let your body decide.

I personally think that the doctor is jumping the gun. Doctors can only estimate how large your baby will be. Most of the time, it is not very precise. Your baby could easily end up being 8 pounds like your first child.
As you probably know, the longer your baby stays in your uterus then the longer he/she has to develop their lungs to their full potential. Babies are very rarely late. They are only considered late because doctors and parents get impatient.
All 3 of my babies were "late". The first one was 10 days late, the second one was 8 days and the the third was 5 days.
If I were you, then I would get a second opinion before doing something so drastic.
Good luck and I'm wishing you a happy healthy baby!

No. Any thing from 37-40 weeks is considered to be full term pregnancy.Your ob is probably aware that you gave birth to a 8lb baby before but she may have it in her mind that it is going to make labor easier on you if the baby is 7lbs and labor will probably be a good but shorter this time with a smaller baby and with it being your 2nd child.Relax and remember ob-gyns deal with this stuff all the time and they would never do any thing to harm your baby they are just simply doing what they think is going to be best. You ob also maybe worried that if she doesn't strip your membranes that you may not have the baby on time and have it past your expected due date and then the baby be even bigger then the 8-9lbs thats already expected. That usually results in a C-section when the babe is over 9lbs depending on how small you are.
good luck to you and congrats!

I had my membranes stripped 3 times during my 37th week. All the DR does is shake things up in there to get things rolling. Sadly it didnt cause me to go into labor. The DR is just trying to help you out since bigger babies are much more difficult to deliver vaginally and usually end up in cesarean. I would take it for what it is. If it works it works if not then oh well. But you do have a say in the matter! Dont forget. =) Good Luck and congrats!

NO. A membrane strip is a competent decision to chemical induction for medical needs. yet permitting your record to this "in basic terms because of the fact" isn't solid medical care. you ought to pass away your being pregnant properly adequate on my own. exertions will come whilst infant is waiting. additionally, at 38 weeks your infant ought to nonetheless choose some baking for yet another 3-4 weeks. What while you're in basic terms 37-36 weeks??? Your due date is in basic terms estimate and their constantly a competent margine for blunders. additionally, a membrane strip isn't delicate. It hurts. I one carried out a pair of circumstances with my final infant because of the fact i replaced into previous due and verging on pre-eclampsia yet i replaced into no longer keen to place as much as a chemical induction. Bony knuckles to no longer sense solid getting rammed into your female areas. additionally, tell your record to maintain her arms to herself and refuse dilation assessments for now. Dilation ability no longer something until eventually you're in energetic exertions and primary assessments will in basic terms serve to stress you mad.

To me it sounds like she is jumping the gun. Feel free to ask her why she want to do it before you make your decision.
For the record, ultrasound weight estimates are notorious for being off by up to 2lbs in either direction.

she is probably just concerned about it being a big baby.... however you have the right to say you dont want it done
