10 gauge side by side AYA. What's it good for?

I inherited a 10 Gauge AYA side by side shotgun. What's it good for besides goose and turkey? It's only been fired a few times. I don't see a lot of 10 gauge shells in the stores here.

My favorite subject. 10 gauge AyA shotguns. Be sure to read my other answer from last week about my experience in buying one. (See link below.)

I've owned a couple of 10 gauge shotguns over the years and I still think they have some advantages over he 12 gauge "super mags" that use a 3.5 inch length shell.

The 10 gauge, in my opinion, tends to kick less than a 12 gauge that is trying to send a similar shot payload downrange. I just think it has something to do with the bore size.

Also, a 10 gauge is going to give a different shot pattern (actually a shot string) when compared to a smaller 12 gauge.

Lastly, the heaviest shot charge in a 3.5 inch mag 12 gauge that I can find is 2 ounces. The heaviest for the 10 gauge is 2.25 ounces. It may not seem like much, but that extra quarter of an ounce can make a difference downrange.

Dislocating shoulders, and putting a serious hurt on anything in front of it.

You can use it for anything you want, but I'd suggest loading your own shells, as most 10 gauge stuff on the market is designed to cripple an ostrich. I can't remember the last time I saw anything smaller than No. 4's, and that's overkill for anything but waterfowl/Turkeys/intruders.

In the early part of the last century, before ol' man Olin cooked up this 3 1/2 inch maddness, 10 gauge used to be 2 7/8 inch stuff. I don't think I've ever seen any on a shelf, but that doesn't mean it does not exist.

Buy the shells on- line they go for about $2.00 a piece......expensive ! at least thats how much the slugs I saw went for....I think I'll stick with my 12 gauge !

Besides waterfowl, its really good for getting a headache and sore shoulder.

10ga isnt very popular becasue a 12ga does just about everything the average hunter/shooter needs, and then some.
