Why did the clock run? Sunday Night football game?
Towards the end of the third quarter the running back made a first down and ran out of bounds with one second left in the third quarter. They moved the chains and started the clock to end the quarter. Doesn't the clock stay stopped when a player takes the ball out of bounds? The commentator didn't mention that it was wrong either. Did I miss something?

Only in the final 2 minutes in the 2nd and 4th quarters and overtime do they stop the clock till the next snap when a player goes out of bounds. Every other time they stop it till the ball is set.

Well i did not see the game in particular but i have some pretty good ideas based on your description.
1. He didn't really go out of bounds before he was down. Now this may not be the case he could have run out of bounds blatantly but also if it was close he could have not been ruled out of bounds.
2. The network that was covering the games clock could have been off. I've seen this happen a few times before.
3. They could have just not cared about that second or fraction of a second.
