Bleach ate through bathtub?

Hello everyone,

I have used several cleaning products on my bathtub.. Ajax, Scrubbing Bubbles, and bleach...

Normally I never have a problem cleaning the tub but one time I ran out of Ajax so I just filled the bathtub about half way and poured some bleach in there with it. I left it there while I continued to clean the other two bathrooms then I came back to it... I drained out the water and then scrubbed the bottom of the tub with some of that lysol that you use for the inside of the toilets ( a small amount) and I rinsed thoroughly...

I think that that combo may have damaged the bottom of the tub... now I have a 'ring around the tub' situation where the tub is lighter on the half of the tub where I left it with the bleachy water and darker above that.. and the bottom of the tub gets strange soap scum stains but not in a normal flat pattern or anything.. kinda like a layer was scraped off the bottom and soap or shampoo has collected there throughout showers and such.

Is there any way to fix this problem? Maybe some thing I could by at a hardware store to reapply to the bottom of the tub? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I have learned from my over zealousness to keep a sterile tub! lol

What you have used shouldn't have damaged your tub. Interesting.

I would just spray some bleach water (half and half) on the tub where it is darker and make it match! lol

    Seriously. I would.

    Good luck!

    What material is the tub?

I'm guessing it's cast iron, and all the combinations of things you tried damaged the porcelain finish If is is cast you need to have it reglazed, or get a new tub.

If it's plastic, there is also no repair that I am aware of. That finish, too, has been damaged.

It won't be so funny when you find out how much it will cost to refinish the tub. The stuff sold in hardware stores are for tiny chips, not refinishing whole surfaces.

Use of abrasive cleaners like Ajax are enough to scratch the surface of the tub, making the finish porous. If your tub is metal......cast iron.....rust will form as the iron is now exposed. Prior to that bacteria, mold and other nasties get into the pores.....yes, soap scum as well.

I hope you have learned your lesson, a quit being so germ-phobic. Regular cleaning with mild, nonabrasives are best for the bathroom. If you are so germ aware, use a weak bleach solution only and only for short periods.....none of this sitting around in the toilet, sink or tub. I don't know what "germ" you think you are contacting......do you work in a contagious disease lab and bringing home samples??
