Why do People think the United States Military is weak?

I agree with what you're saying for the most part but you're missing several facts.

- The Patriots had A LOT of help in the Revolutionary War. France constantly helped the Patriots by giving them supplies, troops, and other aid. Spain was also aiding them. Then there was the Republic of Dutch and Netherlands. America by no means defeated the British alone.

- France is not weak. You're basing your theory on old stereotypes that the French are all incompetent cowards who will surrender after a single shot is fired. The French military is actually the second most powerful in Europe. Only slightly behind the UK. (Not counting Russia.)

- I don't believe Russia ever had a chance in Afghanistan... HOWEVER. The US provided the Mujahideen with many weapons and supplies. This undeniably helped the Mujahideen inflict much more damage on the Russian military.

Most foreigners who talk about Vietnam just don't really have a clue what they're talking about in the first place. Foreigners are under the impression that the US military was completely and utterly defeated. Completely untrue. The US, South Vietnam, and the rest of their allies killed what is estimated to be almost 1.2 million. The US lost 58,159. Total deaths for all of America + allies totaled out to 315,384. That's a big difference. It's pretty clear which side had the more competent military. Of course the US suffered heavy losses but they were inflicting far more damage and killing far more enemies. The military was not the reason America lost in Vietnam as you have already said. Some people can't seem to understand that Vietnam was lost for political reasons more than anything. Most foreigners do not understand what the political landscape in America was like at the time. Instead they just make ignorant assumptions about something they don't understand. Mostly to piss Americans off. We have no idea how other countries would have fared in Vietnam and that is a fact.

Dirty Skunk is absolutely correct; however, you should understand that the specific question you asked is relative and somewhat generic. Currently the United States is the only nation that can execute it's will anywhere, anytime, and for however long it wants, on the face of the planet. We are the only nation that can do any of this unilaterally - meaning we don't need any allies helping us. It also depends on what the government - and nation - are willing to accept. For example, we could reinstate the draft and maintain an Army of millions with current technology if the Country was willing to pay for it - while we would be technologically weaker if we merely maintained current levels, we would still be superior to everyone else for a long time. But that scenario is just no realistic. Even if we get "weaker", we are still superior to everyone else on the planet by a huge order of magnitude. We would have to get weaker by 25 or more percent to even seriously have a degradation in capability - and we would still be the only real super power. The United States will loose it's place int he sun eventually, but it will be a couple of generations off before it is even a concern.

based on the number of naval vessels, aircraft, spending and overall population USA has the greatest military in the world by a large margin. They USN has a larger tonnage than the next 13 combined. Having 11 aircraft carriers and 1 being built all of which are supercarriers (the largest warships ever built) that means there's 1 super carrier in the USN for every foreign carrier (super and normal). At this moment the UK is building 2 and France is building only one suppercarrier. The USA is also first in aircraft number and technology having 18,169 active aerial-based weapons compared to the next largest Russia having only 3,888. The USA also spends $515,400,000,000 annually for military budgets. France now being the second only spends $61,571,330,000 right above China's $59,000,000,000. However China does have the largest manpower in the world with 729,323,673 available military manpower. The USA is 3rd on available manpower with 144,354,117.

Honestly people are stupid for thinking that the US has a weak army.

Most of the leadership in Japan has the same opinion of us in WW2 just weeks before we erased 2 of their major cities off the map in the blink of an eye...

Vietnam? We won all of the battles, but lost the war (due to poor moral stateside). The death toll speaks for itself...

Afghanistan? at the rate they're going, we won't need to win... If they keep strapping bombs to themselves and their children's chests, they'll drive themselves into extinction. Osama? he's probably already dead, splattered all over the inside of some cave like spagetti and meatballs (those thermo-barics leave quite a mess..). We'll never be able to confirm or deny it as he has too many lookalikes.

Iraq? Saddam thought we were weak in desert storm, we wiped out the majority of his supposed "invincible army" in a matter of weeks. He didn't learn his lesson then, and eventually found himself at the end of a rope. As for everyone else, they're in the same boat as Afghanistan (negative population growth)

The United States is the youngest of all countries, and in it's time has become the richest, most advanced country in the world. We have the most powerful, technologically advanced military in the world. We practically invented modern firearms (John Maxim, John Browning, Sam Colt, Eugene Stoner, etc.), Invented mass production, the automobile, etc. Were the first in flight, first to build nuclear weapons, and the only country to put a man on the moon.

And we're weak? Anyone who thinks so is an Idiot in every sense of the word....

Our history's brilliant military leaders had something that today's military leaders ( and this includes the President, by the way ) are clearly missing....BALLS---and the brains to use them!! Our military ranks are rife with brown-nosing, inept people--who are so busy putting affronts as if they KNOW what to do when they don't. And when they snag a promotion---it's done at great risk to scores of OUR military troops. Yes, office politics in the U.S. military CAN be dangerous.

And the installation of political correctness in the military sure has NOT helped matters much, either.

When you face a sly dirty combative enemy---then YOU too must match that enemy in combat by being just as sly....and just as dirty!! When WE accept that lesson and put it to use---maybe THEN we'll regain the world's full respect.

Very true about Vietnam. Whenever a country's own citizens don't support the war, they often lose, like Britain and the American Revolution. I blame liberals for all of America's problems....Damn hippies.

You are right about everything except USA vs. Russia, Russia is so broke they cant even pay the troops the russian air force hardly flies any combat plane because they cant afford the fuel

Weak? What are you talking about. Our military is definitley not weak, as for the poor planning and decisions the brass make - yes I guess you could say that is weak.

Its because they are jealous of our freedom. If they can't have their own happiness living in a strong country (not perfect but strong) they lash out to reduce your own pride so you feel as low as they do.

Just ignore them. If they come to your door threatening you, drop a 2,000lb bomb on their entire family.
