how do I give my boyfriend a great thanksgiving?
Hi,
I`m Englilsh and have met a lovely american man who now lives in England. He is obviously away from his family and I want to know how to give him a perfect thanksgiving day. I know the origins of the occasion, but not what people actually do. I also know that there`s a dinner involved which is a bit scary. Please- any suggestions about how I can make it a good day for him would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Great question. Thanksgiving here in the u.s. (they have it in Canada too I guess), falls on the third Thursday of November. The holiday, while usually centered around family and sport, is really about being thankful for what you have, so whatever you guys get to do I think its just great that you are letting him know that you care, and that you are thankful for him.
Most people get the day off of work and spend most of the day cooking a dinner. Since its not a national holiday over there in the U.K. you probably don't get the day off. I would suggest if you're not comfortable with the big traditional Turkey dinner, or maybe don't have the time or the budget, go with something simpler. If you like seafood, mussels steamed in white wine is great, easy, light and quick. If you've a decent butcher and your boyfriend likes turkey you could just get a turkey breast and roast it instead of the whole bird. Faster cooking time and lower final temperature means moist meat and easy meal. Throw in mash and gravy and you've got it
Anyway, I could ramble on and on, I guess my advice is, stick to your cooking strengths, cook something you know he likes, invite a few friends over if you want, and throw The Brittas Empire or Coronation Street on DVD in and force him to assimilate with your culture and leave his behind.

Make him a turkey dinner, corn, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce and finish the meal with pumpkin pie or apple pie.Apple cider is a nice drink for after dinner. Most of us here in the States put on the TV ( telly ) and catch a football game or two. Just keep it simple and enjoy your home cooked meal with your boyfriend. Oh and if you don't eat much turkey you can bake a nice ham, some people her in the States do that as well.

Its basically a big meal, but since I'm guessing its just you and your boyfriend It won't be as hard. The main food is turkey, then you can also add some little extra things like:
- mash potatoes, sweet potatoes, any potato stuff (except french fries of course)
- corn
- stuffing
- some veggies
You don't have to do all of that just a few suggestions

Cook him a big Turkey dinner with all the trimmings, bit like our Christmas Dinner but not sure about the sprouts, but Turkey, Mash, Peas, carrots, Cabbage and roast spuds and parsnips, etc.. Don't forget the gravy.
If he is from the South, they deep fry their turkeys, you won't have much luck doing that here, you need a massive metal bucket and a fire in the garden.
Pumpkin pie is another tradition they have, or apple pie. recipes easy to find online. Thanksgiving over their is much like Christmas over here, it's about family, giving thanks for the good things that have happened over the year.
if he can't have his family around, what about your friends and family?
Why not get in contact with his family and ask them to record a message for him, they can email it to you and why not ask them what they normally do on the day.
I know American football and sports are a big part of the day for a lot of americans, See if you can get some coors, or budweiser and get his fave team streaming online.
They have thanks giving parades but I reckon you are stumped on that one. But don't forget to get him a thanksgiving card
