How do you get a rounded off starter bolt out.?
I have a 97' Ford F250 pickup and it needs a new starter but the top bolt got rounded off and the bottom one broke which is another problem entirely but does anyone know how to get a rounded off bolt out.
It seems to be a 1/2 inch socket and the head is rounded off.

You will have to drill the head off and use vice grips to get the rest of the bolt out after the starter is slipped off. Sorry you have such trouble with this. It could have been a simple 2 hour job.
I had a stuck head bolt which broke off once and I had to burn the threads with ferric chloride a few hours before it would budge with the vice grips. That is quite risky since ferric chloride will eat up steel. Hope yours responds to penetrating oil and big vice grips.

You meant that the bolt is stripped. There is a kit made by Irwin or Craftsman with various size counter sockets available in auto parts store. You place the correct size socket over the stripped bolt and tap it in with a hammer. Then using a wrench start rotating counter clockwise. The socket will bite deeper into the bolt as you turn the wrench causing it to unscrew. I've used this many times successfully.

If it is possible to simply hit the head of the bolt very hard with a big hammer, the threads will loosen considerably. Then the bolt will unscrew more easily with a slightly smaller socket also forced onto the bolt head.

Simple and save some money doing it. Take the closet thing in metric 12 point design that almost fits it 11mm or 12mm and insert a short extension and drive the socket on with a hammer till it bottoms out. Attach the ratchet and turn counter clockwise till it's free.
Source(s): Most FORD starter bolts are 9/16 headed in pick-ups and the 1/2 inch designs are 12 point socket deals, not the standard 6 point which is probably where you went wrong on it and rounded the head. - How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

You can buy an inexpensive Dremel type tool and with cone shaped grinding stone and grind a center point in the bolt. Then you can drill it out. Almost impossible to use a center punch at this point.

Get a socket set that is made using flank drive design . They work differently than regular sockets. Regular sockets work on the corners of the nut. Flank drive sockets work on the flats.

use a 15mm socket sounds like you tried using a 5/8 the starter bolts generally ain't that tight.

You might want to take it to a mechanic or anyone with an airhammer and put it on the edge of the bolt and get it off. or you might want to have it cut out and get a new bolt. Same the happened with the oil plug on my car. Had to have it cut out.
