How do i re-turn on gas to water heater?
I shut off the entire water heater one week ago, until locating and fixing a large bathroom leak. Now that it's time to relight the pilot manual ignition, I cannot hear the gas feeding into the line. I've turned on the circuit breaker, the gas line valve is parallel to the gas line, depressed the gas valve on the tank to PILOT, etc. tried lighting, yet nothing happens. After 4-5 attempts, there has been no gas smell, either. My gas company won't help, Mobile Home Repair says min. $80.00 to fix. What's your advise for a 60 yr old female DIYer?

you need to keep the gas valve depressed for several minutes(which can seem an eternity)

Bunky, It sounds as though you have done everything right except for 1 thing... OK. The gas cock is on & you have turned the gas valve to "Pilot". That's good. Now, there's another "Button" (it's probably red) and it's right next to that gas valve control that you have turned to: Pilot (the one that says on/off/pilot) In order to get the gas to start flowing through the gas valve now towards the pilot, you have to depress that other button and hold it down. As soon as you push that button down, you should start to hear some "flow" coming from the pilot. Remember though, there is no gas in that line between the valve & the pilot right now. The gas from the valve, has to push all the existing air out of that line 1st, before the gas will start coming out from where the pilot is. So, when you're ready to re-light the pilot, push that other button down & wait about 5 seconds before you try to re-light it. Then, continue to keep that button held down until the pilot has been lit, otherwise the gas will stop flowing. Bunky, once you depress that button & the gas starts coming out, the important thing is this: Basically, get that pilot light lit as quickly as possible. DO NOT let an excessive amount of gas build up under the water heater. If that happens, stop & wait 5 minutes to let it clear out before trying again. That is extremely important! Otherwise, you will have a little explosion there. OK? Anyway now that you have got your pilot light lit and you still have that "other button" held down, Continue to keep that button held down for about 30 seconds Then, take your finger off of that button and turn the gas valve control knob from "Pilot" to "ON". Your water heater burner should be firing now and if the water in your tank is totally cold, the burner will continue to fire for about 30 minutes. There ya go!

Go back over everything and re check. If your still not getting gas to light the pilot then it's probably your gas valve going bad. This is unusual but they do go bad. Most of the time the thermal couples go bad and the tank won't light. If you have the older style tank the thermal couple is pretty easy to change. This part is available at your local home improvement store for about $10.00.

First, don't panic. It might be that nothing's broken at all.
That pilot doesn't draw much gas, (you won't hear gas filling the line),
and the line has likely filled with air which must be vented out through
that small pilot opening.
Getting it filled with gas is going to take some patience.
Hold that button down for a full minute or so, (or until you start smelling gas),
before you try lighting the pilot.
(If you do start getting a gas smell, it might be prudent to let go the button and
wait a minute or two to let it dissipate before pressing the button again and
trying to light the pilot. (We do want to keep our eyebrows.)

ralph is correct. after having it off for so long it needs time to fill pipe and come out, may take several minutes, be patient, it will come, the thermocouple tells the gas valve to keep sending gas to the pilot, but as long as you have the pilto knob pressed in, gas will come out, thermocoupls doesnt start its job until you let it go.
