How to keep a dorm room smelling fresh and clean?
So, my dorm room has no ventilation system (due to the fact that we have no air conditioning - there's no need for it here) and it gets really musty and just plain smelly in here. My roommate gets cold (boohoo put on a jacket) and insists that we close the windows or only open them slightly. The only way to get rid of this smell is to open both the windows, and leave the fan facing the outside of one window, to keep the air circulating. I do feel for her, because I know she gets cold, even though I don't. I need to figure out a solution for this, because I can NOT stand the smell in here. Is there any product or air circulator I can buy so it doesn't smell in here??
Thanks in advance :D I'll owe you one for sure!
We obviously keep everything clean in here - sheets, and laundry are done once a week. She does have a slight problem with being a tad sloppy, but nothing to cause smells.
There IS no cause to the smell. Seriously. That was my first course of action.

First of all, change the linens and clean the place regularly.
In order to avoid temperature problems with your roommate, agree to leave the windows open during the day when you're both out.
You can close them when you come home.
That gives the place a chance to air out without you both freezing.
Even in the coldest winter, leave the windows open about an inch when you need to
You probably won't need to do it every day.
If you're allowed in the dorm, you can burn plain, UNSCENTED candles.
They burn up all of the bad smells.
Yes, really
I burn them at home when people smoke in the house and when I cook fish.

My roommate and I don't have a problem keeping ours clean. We put our dirty clothes in our hampers, clean up messes when they're made, don't keep smelly food or containers in the room for longer than a day, keep tiny trashcans instead of large ones so we're forced to empty them regularly (cause large ones the stuff could sit in there for weeks and start to smell). We sweep our floors and clean our bathroom/sink area with 409 each weekend, we use spray air freshener in there when needed. In addition to the spray, to make the room smell good we use those cones that you just set on a desk and pop the cone up to activate it. Theyre pretty cheap, and I don't think they're banned like all the other air freshener things or candles that use plugs/fire

I honestly think the solution here is to find out what is causing the smell.. I'm not a fan of cold fresh air either, and hardly ever have my windows open, winter or summer, but my rooms don;t smell. The causes of a bad smell are dirty clothes, especially socks, sweaty feet and shoes. Old food left around, and poor personal hygiene.. get rid of these, and your dorm shouldn;t smell

Set small bowls of white vinegar throughout room. It will absorb odors. There is a product called Zorbx Unscented that can be purchased at Lowes or Amazon. It gets out all types of smells and doesn't leave a fragrance. You can also simmer white vinegar and water when the smell is bad in the kitchen area..

Yeah older places smell sometimes especially with poor circulation.
charcoal works great. It absorbs odors. We did this for an old fridge once. If you have have a place to put some out of site that would work great.
Also vinegar is the same. You can put some small dishes of it somewhere it wont be seen or get spilled.
These are nice:

These are nice too. You can get them at some groceries and at most hardward stores. I think they had scented ones at Bed Bath and Beyond http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/productdetails.as...

1. Keep garbage emptied
2. No food lying around
3. INSIST on windows open at some point each day
4. Keep laundry clean
5. Change bedding often
6. Spray shoes with anti-odor spray...dirty shoes can smell up a whole room
7. Use air freshners of some kind...try 'clean' scented ones as opposed to sweet 'food' scented ones.
