DEFINITELY. Why should we celebrate a man who had directed against the orders of his superiors, and completely butchered a peaceful and gentle tribe for his own sick reasons and led the beginning of a racial genocide on the people who loved and took care of this continent.

Columbus Day is a major day of celebration for Italian-Americans but I think honoring someone else would be more appropriate because of Columbus's highly controversial qualities. He undoubtedly killed and tortured Native Americans, took their gold, lands, etc., so I can understand why many of their descendants think celebrating his life is basically a slap in the face. Amerigo Vespucci is a better choice if you're looking for a famous Italian with ties to the New World (first one to devise a map of the New World - hence "America."). Or better yet, Filippo Mazzei, a physician/political philosopher who was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson and who helped the American cause by furnishing arms to Virginia during the Revolution.

I just want Columbus day gone. I don't really care if they replace it as native day or something else, but I would just be happy if they get rid of Columbus day. I find celebrating Columbus day very disrespectful towards Indigenous people, the guy stole from, tortured, enslaved, killed Native men, women, and children. The guy doesn't deserve a holiday.

He discovered it on accident it was a new world for Europe. So i am completely saying he was a idiot and had no sense of direction because he was supposed to travel east. BTW it is said that Nordic travelers wandered Canada numerous times. A holiday for Native Americans. Honestly speaking i would not mind they were slaughtered for there land and is near endangered, numbers going from millions to thousands. Yes i believe we should have a holiday dedicated to them.

I agree with "Nuoveag" it could be a possibility that the new world was visited by African people if these people do not resemble Africans then my eyes deceive me much. This is an ancient giant head discovered in Mexico. http://www.traveladdicts.connectfree.co.uk/Mexico/... The Olmecs are believed by some to be of African origin. They are the oldest "new world" civilization and there language is also unknown

Columbus Day should not be held in this Country, it should be celebrated in Europe, and Europe alone. The majority of my descendants are American Indian, and making a holiday for the likes of Columbus is a huge slap in the face to us. Celebrate your hostile takeover anywhere but on this soil, or do it quietly.

To me, it is just as ludicrous as dedicating an entire month to black history, cinco de mayo, St. Patricks day, Christmas, or Chinese New Years. These all are racist holidays.

I think that it depends whether you really believe that he actually discovered anything other than a great opportunity to exploit, rob, and genocide MILLIONS of natives that had already discover this beautiful continent we call America.

by utilising this, do you propose abolishing a occasion of one assassin and plunderer with a occasion of an finished human beings of cannibals and murderers? the 'non violent', civilized natives who sacrificed women and babies to their gods, and decrease out the hearts of their sufferers? went to war against different community tribes as opponents and enslaved them and killed *their* women and babies? oh particular, i wholeheartedly have confidence interior the goodness of the community peoples of usa

    LMBAO@Slippery, that was hella funny.

No, because we celebrate other fictitious holidays, like Halloween and such. The term Native, sounds offensive. I mean, how far back in history would we considered someone to be native? There were Africans explores and settler who lived in America, years before any European laid eyes on this soil.

@Judgement Yard....There's a book by Ivan Van Sertima "They Came Before Columbus: The African Presence in Ancient America" and Jared Diamond book "Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies" on how Asian discovered America and made a map years before Europeans voyagers.

This day is significant because in 1616 Pocahontas discovered Great Britain and Europe when she was accompanied there by her manservant John Smith.

yes we dont have Hitler day so we shouldn't have Columbus day

columbus killed more people and Hitler said he learned from him yet everyone says hitler is the devil and columbus is a wonderful man

this is because hitler killed whites( jews) and columbus killed indians and blacks.

shows you what they still think of us.
