You didn't mention WHERE the noise is coming from, mileage, any engine mods, etc.

As Richard said, there is no adjustment, the hydraulic lifters are self adjusting. Sportster valvetrains are noisy and the design of the rocker box amplifies the valvetrain noise.

When was the last time the bike was PROPERLY SERVICED? A loose primary chain can make a noise similar to what you described as well as numerous other issues such as loose parts.

From your description, we don't have much to go on and noises are impossible to diagnose through email. Take the bike to a shop and give them sepcific details to what, where and when the noise happens and have them test ride to duplicate the situation and diagnose the noise.

There is no adjustment. The engine has hydraulic roller lifters.
