If a new car came with synthetic oil, do I have to stick with synthetic or can I switch to regular oil?

synthetic oil changes: only about a $100 a change.

Normally, I would say it's ok to change, but since it's a new car, you need to consult your owners manual to see what is recommended. Changing the oil could effect your warranty.

Engine manufacturers carefully select the recommended motor oil viscosity grade for each specific engine, which is why the owners manual recommended viscosity and type of oil should always be used.

You don't mention the make and model. In general, new cars that come with synthetic require synthetic. There are important differences in low temperature performance and sludge resistance. Oil is much cheaper than an engine replacement.

Shop around. $100 is a lot of money for any oil change on a passenger car. $50 is more like it for 4-5 quarts of synthetic, the filter, and the minuscule amount of labor involved. In the US routine maintenance does not have to be done at the dealer to maintain warranty status.

Yes, it is safe to switch back and forth between regular and synthetic oils. But, synthetic oils do offer better protection compared to a regular oil and if that is what the manufacturer recommends, I'd be inclined to stay with that recommendation. After all, cars are big investments...why not look after them properly?

You can change it but its best to stick with the synthetic. It costs more money but you can go longer between oil changes.

Something most people who are answering this question is overlooking is the warranty. If it states to use synthetic oil and you don't chances are your warranty can be voided and you sure don't want that.

there's less wear and friction on the moving parts of a engine using synthetic oil, change your oil yourself, i do and with synthetic oil its about $30.00 to do the change

You can usually check the manual, or the website.

Usually you can drain the synthetic out and replace it with regular oil.

Synthetic is just expensive oil that is rated higher and supposed to make your engine last about 5 months longer, but I think it's just a luxury.
