Can I get a computer virus if.....?

Can I get a virus if I hook another computers hard drive up to my computer externally via sata to usb connection. I need to scan the hard drive to see if it has bad sectors.

All of my windows updates are up to date. I have a firewall plus I am connected to a router plus my anti virus is all up to date and has the latest definitions installed.

I realize nearly anything is possible when talking about computers and virus's. However, Im looking into more of the probable aspect.

You can get an auto-run virus...

I would suggest turning off autorun on your system before, just to be safe.

If you mount the hard drive (which your computer probably won't need to do for the scan), then possibly. It depends on what hole the virus exploits. Your firewall won't help you here- that just stops abnormal Internet traffic. Basically, if the drive has a drive letter, it means your computer is looking at it. If there's an unpatched hole in the Windows file system drivers or potentially even explorer, then the virus could infect you.

Even if the hard drive has a virus you are not in danger unless you mess with the infected file.

I doubt it, as you`ll only be scanning the drive and not opening files.
