which Garmin GPS model is best?

You can't really say which is better, because it really comes down to a matter of preference and how much you are willing to pay. There are much better models available then the ones you have listed. I checked on a few sites, and pulling from personal experience with some of the ones I've tried and my friends have tried I'd say that the 265WT would be the better model overall and it has SD card capabilities if you wanted to have a lot of maps. But for the price and its rerouting calculation speed I'd recommend the 255W.

Basically

If you don't want all the bells and whistles and just want a good gps. Then go with the 255W. If you are the kind of person who has to have lots of extra options then go with the 265WT.

i would strongly recommend that you consider newelectronx gps primo version, it has what the Garmin nüvi 255W and Garmin nüvi 265WT. one of the only difference in these 2 devices is that one has bluetooth and the other does not. you can see the other difference by comparing the features.
