How to prune an overgrown fig tree?
I have a very large fig tree, some branches are at least 20 feet tall, naturally I could not gather the fruit from that height and would like to know the proper way to prune this tree. The spread is approximately 15 feet so I got lots of figs from the low growing branches but none from the top.

If it's multi-stemmed I would cut out some of the oldest, hence tallest branches first and then prune the remaining tall branches down the node or crotch nearest but below the desired height. I also prune up the lower branches for easy access to the middle but it's not necessary. Spring is a better time to do major pruning as where I am in Maryland I usually get some winter die-back and if I wait the damage is usually less.
