That could be something like - You ought to stay home and babysit your little brother, but you want to go to the movies with your friends.

Is this for a college application essay?
It pretty much just means that a lot of times the right thing to do isn't really what you want to do. "Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same"
Like if your friend is going through a rough time and really just wants to stay home and needs someone to be there, but you just want to go party. The right thing would be to stay home with your friend, but maybe that's not what you want to do. Just an example.
Or if you see someone getting bullied the right thing to do would be stop the bullying, but maybe that's not what you want to do if you're scared of what people think.

Tell about a time when you had to choose between what you SHOULD do (ought to do), and what you WANTED to do.
Example:
You "ought" to go to school, but a friend said, "let's go to the beach instead".
So, what did you do, did you go to school, like you "ought to", or did you go to the beach because that's what you "wanted" to do?
