Does anyone else have ignorant siblings/friends that think mainstream music can measure up to classics?
I'm fourteen (fifteen November 5) and have a very ignorant ten-year-old sister. Okay, so earlier today, I'm in my living room and I turn on The Ramones. So she starts whining about how annoying they are and how the singer's voice is "weird". I roll my eyes as the next song comes on, an Aerosmith song (I burned this CD). Again, complaining.
You see, she's one of those teenyboppers that thinks she's punk because she listens to Avril Lavigne (who we all know is NOT punk). Also, she hero-worships and follows a ton of other mainstream crap artists (including Taylor Swift, Ke$ha, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, and Rihanna). So I ask her who's more talented, The Ramones or Taylor Swift. She says Taylor Swift. The Ramones or Miley Cyrus. Miley Cyrus. The Ramones or Ke$ha. Ke$ha. (Keep in mind, I'm asking her who are more TALENTED, not who she likes better. Of course, she is ten and ten-year-olds tend to be that close-minded and ignorant.) Aerosmith or Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift. Aerosmith or Miley Cyrus. Miley Cyrus. Aerosmith or Ke$ha. Aerosmith (at least she got this one right). Again, all are talent-based questions that I asked her.
The only thing good about her taste, in my opinion, is that she doesn't like Justin(e) Bieber.
So...
1. Why are little kids so painfully ignorant?
2. Why do they hero worship these sluts, talentless hicks, and drunken whores?
3. What's the appeal in those lame pop artists?
4. What's your opinion on my sister's taste in music?
@Mr. Self Destruct (THTF) =O Is she alright in the head? Akon=90% autotune. Everyone in your list can actually sing. I can't believe she said that about Freddie Mercury, especially.
@Oi! SHARP Oi! That would be older sister, lol.
@Oi! SHARP Oi! Like I read that Metallica influenced Avril Lavigne.
@Sookie She should at least be listening to the talented ones.
@Northern Sky While everyone does have different opinions, talent is not subjective. Talent is based on skill. I get that she has different opinions. I'm just asking why the radio? Why not like '80s pop or something at least worth something.
@Northern Sky Just shows you know nothing about me. Sure I'm opinionated, everyone is on some subjects, but that's just one part of me. I could argue this for hours and hours but I don't think I feel like it.
1. Well, let's see. She's my little sister. Also four years younger than me.
2. I'm not an attention whore, if that's what you're getting at.
3. I understand that it's pointed toward different people. It's just a sad excuse for music.
4. Talent is based on skill. Talent and skill are closely related. Last time I checked, skill isn't subjective. Oh, and Matt Traynor didn't pick up drumsticks until sixteen. Regardless of time, if someone works at it, they can become whatever they want on that instrument.
5. For one, my parents have two of those big books of CD sleeves, almost full, in the upstairs hallway. Everyone in the house has free access to them. Also, if you don't want to look like a dick, don't throw the word around. It's kind of sad.
@Quite Alright First of all, that's SHE. Second, why is it a big deal that someone at the age of fourteen dislikes the radio. I know plenty of people my age that dislike it. Not trying to seem hardcore, just don't like it.
It's funny that everyone is yelling at my opinion well also yelling at me to let my sister have an opinion. Ironic, huh?
Also, classic rock isn't all I listen to. I also listen to post-hardcore, pop-punk, powerpop, and some screamo. There's more but I can't think of the specific genres at the time.

she has a shitty taste in music but she is still at the age where she thinks that if its on the radio its obviously better than stuff that isnt on the radio. the only thing you can do is hope that she gets into real music. thats your job as an older sister(edit).
what you could do is say "hey did you know this band influenced taylor swift" or something along those lines.
oh my sincere apologies.

1. Where does a 14 year old get off calling people "little kids?"
2. Why must you map out the thought patterns of others to satiate your e-peen?
3. Why can't you accept that it's a different market, and as such, is "marketed" towards a different demographic (particularly children and teenage females).
4. What makes you think that talent isn't subjective, and what you consider talent might not be considered talent by another person (and vice versa)? And if I remember correctly Joey Ramone didn't even pick up a guitar until he was 17.
5. In what world would a 10 year old have the means to be able to expand her musical repertoire as much as someone significantly older who is able to buy CDs or access the internet with less restrictions? Its like when you're in middle school and someone learns a new word and you don't know what it means and everyone snubs you even though you had never been exposed to such language before... Stop being a dick and either let your sister listen to whatever the hell she wants, or try teaching her about other stuff... But don't force it on her or call her stupid

I think its cool that you like all the old school rock and roll, but you can't judge someone just because they like a different type of music that you personally don't like. Everyone's different. I personally LOVE broadway musicals and a lot of people hate it. I don't judge them, everyone likes what they like. You just have to be open minded. I agree that the people that listen to mainstreem music shouldn't bash the classics, but I also believe the classic lovers shouldn't bash the mainstreem music. The music now will be some of the bases of the music in the future, thats the beauty of music. It changes throughout generations, and once a song is made it's always there. That's why there's different genres of music, because theres a song for everyone. If there were just 1 genre or era of music, then life would be so boring. You have to explore and if you don't like it, then you don't like it. But you should at least respect it because that song is there for a reason and someone out there likes it or relates to it. So you have to see the beauty in every genre of music or era.

Definitely. Lil Wayne is the sort of funny story, as is Lady Gaga. Being an "artist" in their form takes without doubt no ability in any respect. They (commonly) do not write their possess "tune" and the beats are just about all of the identical. I believe, regardless that, I do like a few artists that can be a bit of extra mainstream (Switchfoot, Mat Kearney) however the songs I just like the first-class are those that you do not pay attention at the radio.

Grow up. People have their own tastes (and your sister is ten, it's not exactly easy to expand your musical horizons at that age) and talent is purely subjective. I think Aerosmith are talentless hacks, does that make me right? Of course it doesn't.
If your sister likes listening to mainstream pop and thinks they are more talented, then let her enjoy it instead of trying to force your own view of what is good on her.
I was thinking about using Hitler as an example of why this is bad but...

Yes, my 17 year old sister told me that Akon could sing better than Robert Plant, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Freddie Mercury and Kurt Cobain.

Do you remember what artists and type of music you liked at the age of 10?
It's probably different from now!

And I'm sure there are plenty of indie kids cranking Modest Mouse and Animal Collective laughing at your love of Aerosmith. And even yet there are kids who listen to GY!BE who think the Modest Mouse fans are plebeians.
In short: Music isn't about being rebellious or NON-MAINSTREAM or anti-commercial or anti-anything.

Yes, my younger brother believes that no voice can measure up against that of Ke$ha's or Demi Lovato... I argued with him about this, telling him that neither of them will be as great as Janis Joplin, Joan Jett or any of the past and present females of rock. He said that those two sound whiny and stupid, and I just looked at him and shook my head.
He also believes that Trent Reznor's, Maynard James Keenan's and Chris Cornell's voices suck, He considers the singer of Rise Against, Tim McIlrath, the best rock vocalist ever to have lived. I mean, I do like Rise Against, but they will never measure up to the sound of Audioslave, Nine Inch Nails, Tool or any other bands...

You're both as ignorant as each other: neither of you are able to accept that the other likes different music. Everyone has different opinions.
You're very opinionated, judgemental, brash, cocky.. and that's all I've got from a bloody yahoo!answers question.
