Do you prefer rhyme or reason; fact or fiction?

WONDERING

by Elaine

Shall I abandon rhyme

and write of inner mysteries

in ways that none else comprehend?

Shall my poems all be metaphors

for a life lived in many ways

and times and places?

Does rhyme make the poem

or does it seem contrived

falsely flowing unlike life?

And what of the boxed-in days and years

can I free them in verse unrhymed

or shall I abandon poetry?

There is no reason to abandon poetry and I know you would never be able to do that. Neither should you abandon rhyme, it is beautiful when it is done well. Meander between the different forms, you will have freedom then.

This is a wonderful free flowing effort Elaine. Nicely done.

I think there's a place for all styles of writing in poetry don't you?

Everyones life is a mish-mash of rhyme and free verse mixed in wild abandon.

Poetry is the reflection. So to answer the question posed by your poem -

    Maybe...at times

    Perhaps...at times

    No

Yes; but you can never abandon poetry...you'd get spiritually clogged up!

Rhyme and reason, fact and fiction,

    They're all within my predilection.

To pair a phrase or two,

it's not the dog that wags the tale,

but sharpness of its bite that matters most.

    Edit─

It didn't dawn on me until much later that my meaning might be misconstrued. The word "dog" was ABSOLUTELY NOT a reference to a person, certainly not to you or any other poets here!

It's not whether rhyme or reason, fact or fiction are used, it's whether they're used well.

We always have parallel ideas. I have one like this on slow boil.

Your next book will be a whopper.

I'm so a poor judge and of little quality, but I mostly write my reality. It can be metaphorical, it can be allegorical, but it's usually experiential.
