Christianity does. Does Islam?
Christianity allows for a freedom to believe or not believe without fear of physical harm. Does Islam allow this same freedom of choice without fear? Written in the Koran? Where? Enlighten me. Thanks.
I believe my question was in present tense. But, I too am a graduate of the public school system so I'm never certain of anything. Accommodate to the death is the message I take from the answers.

Christianity doesn't...
if you do not believe you will burn in Hell...
the bible also says in Luke that Jesus says to bring those that do not believe in him so that they could be slain
19:27 But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.
Islam on the other hand doesn't say this

The various passages citing the differences are obvious, In Modern Islam and in Islamic countries and culture denying ones faith in Islam can and does result in harm even unto death. Also any proselytizing by Christians in Islamic controlled states results in harm, imprisonment and death. Just check the news and all will know. Conservative muslims would like to deny it but it is there never the less
Modern Christianity is different obviously non believers are simply ignored. The Bible does say that anyone denying God will also be denied by Christ in the after life and be doomed to hell for all eternity, but here the two faiths agree, only that Christianity lets God do the damning and Islam allows the faithful to cast the judgment.
Not to Deny that people acting in the name of "Chistianity" have forcibly removed, killed others ie in yugoslavia but that happens in all cultures with conflicting politics and religions. Imagine what would happen in America again if rules and laws did not keep the Democrats and Republicans from each others throats.

((THERE SHALL BE no coercion in matters of faith. Distinct has now become the right way from [the way of] error: hence, he who rejects the powers of evil and believes in God has indeed taken hold of a support most unfailing, which shall never give way: for God is all-hearing, all-knowing. (256)))

Christianity, the freedom to believe or not without fear?
What about all the times I've been told that I would be burning in hell because I don't believe. What about the Christians who have been quick to tell me, and at times with a smile on their face, that they'll be having the last laugh when "it's over?" It's not a physical threat, but it's supposed to be a psychological threat, in hopes that one would be scared enough to see it their way and believe like them.
Christianity does not allow for a fair choice. A fair choice does not have a consequence as a "choice", that's coercion.

Really? Christianity allows for the freedom to believe or not? Huh. And I thought non-believers were doomed to Hell. At least that's what I'm usually told when I tell some "well-intentioned" Christian that I don't believe what they do. And yes, the person who mentioned the Crusades has a point you should look into. I'd like to add to that that you may want to look into US history in regard to Native Americans.

Christianity now does not force conversion but they at one time tried to convert the world. They tortured the American Indian and forced on him Christianity.
So most men who have a religion force their believes on other men along with war and hate and violence. Or use religious men to make the people do what the government wants them to do.

Alright -
So again and again.
Abrogation in the Qur'an replaces previous revelation with newer revelation.
So here we go.
2:256 There is no compulsion in religion
Abrogated by -
O Prophet! Strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites! Be harsh with them.... (9:73)
O ye who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are near to you, and let them find harshness in you.... (9:123)
Say unto those of the wondering Arabs who were left behind: Ye will be called against a folk of mighty prowess to fight them until they surrender.... (48:16)[7]
Indian scholar Shah Wali Ullah - That is to say, the reasoned guidance of Islam has become manifest. Therefore, so to speak, there is no compulsion, although, in sum, there may be coercion
Shah Wali Ullah - Such an interpretation can perhaps be attributed to the unconscious pressure of orthodox tradition
Nawab Siddiq Hasan Khan in Fath al-Bayan - ... one should not say of a person convened to Islam under the shadow of the sword, that he was compelled to the Faith for "there is no compulsion in religion". Another construction ... confines the verse to the People of the Scriptures who submitted to the Muslims and agreed to pay jiizjah (poll-tax) but excludes the idolaters from its scope. In the case of the latter, only two alternatives are said to be open - Islam or the sword - on the authority of al-Shabi, al-Hasan, Qatadah and al-Dahhaq
Rahman cites Ibn al-Arabi's work Ahkam al-Qur'an, adding thereafter his own objections to this interpretation:
He (Ibn al-Arabi) declares dogmatically that to compel to the truth is part of the Faith, on the authority of a hadith: "I have been commanded to fight people till they recite the declaration of faith ...", which he considers to have been derived from the Qur'anic verse: "And fight them until persecution is no more and religion is for Allah alone." (8:39; 2:193)[12]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It should be clear that the issue of abrogation is very REAL.
So is it true that there is no compulsion in religion. It is HIGHLY doubtful.
Shari'ah law provides death for apostasy. The only allowance is for those who pay the "tax" to feel subdued by Islam.
The second link provides 18 more verses (some might repeat what I posted here)
This hadith is for all those hypocrite and liar muslims who say Islam allowes freedom of religion,
The prophet of Allah said "If a muslim leaves his religion (Islam), Kill him"
Sahih Bukhari - 52:260
Source(s): Shahih hadith is the most trusted and authentic hadith of about 90% Sunni muslims (including peaceful and moderate muslims) - 1 decade ago
Don't be so general. There are many times when the Church has been at fault, and there are many Muslims who do not follow the doctrine of the few (although gaining in number) extremists who wish to blow many of us infidels to smitherines.
Christianity has not always allowed that (and, in some places, it still doesn't). Check out what Christianity was doing when it was about the age Islam is now...
