what is the proper way to set deck 4x4s when you are putting them on a cement driveway?

I was helping a lady from Church stain and seal her deck when I noticed who ever built it just put the 4x4s on top of the driveway, nothing is anchoring them to the concrete. My concern is that water will start to rot the bottom and if there is weight on top the 4x4s could slip out causing the deck to collapse, what can I do to prevent this, the deck is attached to the house on a ledger board and the 3 4x4s on the outside.

There are several ways you can go about doing this. Probably the easiest would be to use what is known as a deck block. It is a concrete form footing that has a slot in the top for the 4x4 to sit in. This gets it off the ground and eliminates the rotting aspect.

The other way would be to concrete them in the ground. This would be a pain in the *** considering it is going over a driveway.

There are also brackets that the 4x4 can sit in then you screw into all 4 sides and it is angled so there is another surface that meets the ground and you would use tapcons to secure it to the concrete.

I would go with the concrete footings personally.

There is a product I purchased on ebay this year.It is called lifetime wood treatment. This product is used by Canadian national parks on signs and other wood products that are exposed to weather all of the time.It will cost about 100.00 for enough product to make 5 gallons. But,like the product name says, this stuff is a one time for life product.I first read about it in Mother earth news magazine.I put it on my front porch and my back deck with 5 gallons. It is a very user friendly product.you will not be disappointed.
