QUESTIONS AND ANCESTORS

by C.S.Scotkin

If I were gifted with one wish

I know now what I'd ask.

Long talks with my ancestors gone

Awakened for this task.

I'd hope to find the clues that rise

like sap, my family tree

has always had a few snapped twigs,

which one has led to me?

Would they appreciate this call

from rest eternal earned,

forgive my curiosity,

did once their own hearts yearn?

I wonder if they'd want to share

those memories they saved,

or would they rather not disclose

the secrets of their graves?

"Be careful what you wish for..."

Cliched I knew, but true.

Perhaps I have no need to know

the worlds they struggled through.

Let me be grateful for their lives,

forever let them rest.

I hope that someone in my past

bequeathed to me their best.

Your poetry is fantastic. It has a good rhyme scheme and a sweet melody in it.

Its about a young joyous and peaceful child who is curious to know about his ancestors but he doesn't dare to because he has a respectful belief in them.Brilliant idea, keep writing some melodic and meaningful peaces of poetry.

OMG! I love this poem. Not only have to you done the subject honor with your lovely style here, but the title is just perfect. This is wonderful.

I was just saying to hubby a few days back, that it's so hard not to have the connection to those before me that could've answered so many of the questions I have now at this stage of my life. But like you I, too, wonder if perhaps their struggles are best left to rest. Some things perhaps we shouldn't know after all.

    Nice poem, C.

unlike most of the alive, dead people are very discreet; they would

    "rather not disclose

    the secrets of their graves?"

They can't tell, even if they wanted to. but they may drop by in dreams to give a sign or tow, usually for the seer own good rather than theirs.

Ironically, "If I were gifted with one wish",

I wouldn't know what to wish for.

    Thought provoking poem.

"Long talks with my ancestors gone

    Awakened for this task."

You're implying that you already gathered much information by talking with your ancestors. But throughout the poem you talk about how you ask them all your questions.

If this was supposed to be a flashback, then you should rephrase that first stanza.

A nice poem. My ancestors cannot tell me what I need to know.

My wish would be for acceptance.

  • very nice

I enjoyed reading this, thank you!

As usual, as always, your poetry flows. I can't get back beyond my great-grandparents; all their records were destroyed in the Holocaust.
