How does an officer verify his radar?

Before setting out for the day, how does an officer (in New York City) test his speed detection equipment (LIDAR, RADAR, or other) to ensure that it is functioning properly and is accurate?

Both radar and lidar have internal and external tests.

For radar, the internal test is done by the unit and is displayed for the officer to see. For all models I'm familar with, the test simulates 64 miles per hour. The external tests consist of tuning forks set at 35 adn 65 miles per hour.

Internal tests for lidar are also displayed for the officer to see. The external tests consist of measuring a known distance, and by aiming the lidar at a fixed object and confirming the sighting is accurate.

You have to be more specific or you'll get BS answers like everyday they get tuned.

I forget what actual component needs to be inspected every certain amount of months, maybe it's the tuning forks? I know there's a way to subpoena the service records on radar, to verify if they were properly serviced.

If you're trying to fight a speeding ticket, here's something that might help. I'm not advocating false testimony, of course.

In a moving vehicle radar reading there is a very large possibility of error, called the cosine error. I beat a ticket in Texas pointing this out.

It is already calibrated when the station receives the product, and if you get pulled over and ask to see the radar the officer can go back and look at previous radars and look at yours.
